The City of Canton, Ohio is seeking applicants for a clerical/open examination position. The role involves answering phones, greeting visitors, handling documents, data entry, and routine accounting tasks. A two-part examination includes a 40 WPM typing test and a general knowledge written exam.

This is an open examination. To be eligible under this position all applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D., must be a U.S. Citizen or have a permanent resident card and be at least 18 years of age.
Performs basic clerical duties: answer telephones; transfer calls and takes messages; greet people coming into the office; types correspondence; files correspondence and other City documents; data entry; may respond to customer inquiries; processes routine paperwork; performs basic record-keeping activities; may perform cashiering duties; may process collection activity on delinquent accounts; may enter data via computer to generate customer bills and work orders or to process paperwork; performs other clerical duties as required.

III. Processes payments from customers.
IV. May compile and maintain accounting records. Performs accounting activity which may include the preparation of various ledger reports or other accounting reports of records, necessary for the proper maintenance of departmental information.
VI. Performs basic clerical duties.
This is a two-part examination consisting of a typing exam and a written exam. If you do not pass the typing exam, you will not be invited to take the written exam. You must successfully pass both portions of the examination to be considered eligible. The typing requirement is 40 words per minute (WPM).
The written examination will consist of general knowledge questions on clerical practices to include: English Usage, Office Procedures, Punctuation and Capitalization, Letter Writing Techniques, Math, Proofreading, Reading Comprehension, Microsoft Suite, and other related areas.
A 70% passing point will be used.
The written examination will be offered on September 21 and 22.
Per OAC Rule 123: 1-9-01, an applicant who has competed in a civil service examination cannot repeat that examination or take an examination for the same classification within FOUR MONTHS from the date of original examination, unless an alternative form of examination is given, or unless other standards are specified in the examination announcement.
Your name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates upon receiving a passing score. Once the list has been established, your name will remain on the list for a period of one (1) year.
As provided in ORC 124.23C, any person who has completed service in the uniformed services, who have been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is an Ohio resident and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than 180 days of active duty service pursuant to an executive order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress of the United States may file with the director a certificate of service or honorable discharge (DD-214 – Long version), and upon this filing, the person shall receive an additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member’s initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
Pursuant to Civil Service Rules applicants are hereby advised that the position of employment being examined for is subject to a drug test. Accordingly, eligibility is not considered final until drug testing has been successfully completed with a negative result.
