Job summary

American University seeks a full-time Operating Engineer to maintain and repair campus utility systems, including steam, hot water, and chilled water, under supervision of the Assistant Chief and Lead Engineers.

The role requires after-hours/weekend availability, strong troubleshoot skills, and the ability to mentor new staff. 40 hours weekly with multiple shifts and a physically demanding environment. 3rd Class DC Steam Engineer license preferred.

Qualifications

• H.S. Diploma or equivalent. 3rd Class DC Steam Engineer’s license (non-restricted) by date of hire. Must possess a current United States driver’s license and be able to obtain university driving privileges.
• Knowledge of site utilities systems and ability to read blueprints and technical manuals.
• Familiarity with BAS, water chemistry, thermodynamics, and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, and repair campus utility systems (steam, hot water, chilled water) and related plant equipment to meet reliability and energy efficiency goals.
• Maintain records of inspections, operation, maintenance, and repairs to optimize scheduling and repairs.
• Perform tests on boiler/chiller water chemistry and ensure proper chemical treatment.
• Support after-hours and weekend request resolutions via the customer response center (2Fix).
• Complete training and maintain an Individual Development Plan in the LMS.
