Job summary

University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Community Care Event Observer for nighttime campus safety, with shifts typically from 9:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

These temporary, non-exempt roles support a respectful campus environment by monitoring events, assessing safety, and coordinating with Penn Police and other offices. Observers work in pairs on Thursday through Saturday nights and during special events, receiving training before their first shift.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must not be currently enrolled as a student at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Must not hold other employment at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Strong observational and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain composed, objective, and professional in high-energy social environments.
  • Prior experience in public safety, event staffing, student affairs, or community outreach is a plus.
  • Commitment to reliability, discretion, and upholding university standards.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol designated areas of campus during assigned shifts, focusing on locations where student events may be occurring.
  • Monitor both registered and unregistered student gatherings to help ensure safety and adherence to university expectations.
  • Identify and assess potential safety risks, including crowding, visibly intoxicated individuals, disruptive conduct, or other concerning behaviors.
  • Use discretion to elevate issues to university staff or emergency services when necessary.
  • Coordinate with relevant offices including the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life (OFSL), Office of Student Affairs (OSA), and Community Standards and Accountability (CSA), as directed.
  • Serve as a neutral and professional presence to help deter unsafe behaviors and support a safe campus experience.
  • Submit shift summaries or incident reports following each assignment.
  • Attend required training and orientation sessions.
  • Additional duties as assigned
