Job summary

Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, HI, is seeking a full-time Security Officer to be the first point of contact for visitors and staff on campus. You will monitor entry points, patrol buildings, enforce access control, and respond to incidents to protect people and property.

The role requires strong communication, report-writing abilities, and a valid Hawaii guard card with First Aid/CPR/AED certification. A high school degree is preferred.

Qualifications

• Effective written and oral communication skills in the English language.
• Ability to provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, text, computer and other related technology, email, public address system, or in person.
• Ability to analyze and evaluate information to choose the best solution and solve problems.
• Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
• Strong interpersonal skills including staff, faculty, and community/customer relations.
• Valid Hawaii Driver's License and clean traffic abstract.
• Exemplary professional image and attitude.
• Ability to maintain poise and self-control under stressful situations when dealing with the public, faculty, staff, and students.
• Must have a valid Hawaii guard card or be able to attend and pass the Hawaii Guard card course.
• First Aid/CPR/AED certification is required for the position and must be obtained in the initial probationary period.
• Must clear the drug screening, physical, and fingerprint/background check requirements.
• The job requires someone with critical thinking skills who can quickly observe a situation and make the appropriate response.
• Good working knowledge of management practices so he/she can efficiently perform his/her job.
• Professionalism to handle incidents of verbal, abusive, and threatening behavior.
• Awareness of when to act on his/her initiative and when to seek appropriate advice and guidance.

Responsibilities

• Patrol school premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and suspicious activity.
• Monitor entrances and authorize departure of employees, visitors, and others to guard against unwelcome guests.
• Write reports of irregularities such as damage, theft, or unusual occurrences.
• Maintain knowledge of campus locations, departments, and access routes.
• Communicate emergencies and safety information promptly to the appropriate personnel.
• Operate and monitor security equipment and report outages or anomalies.
