Job summary

Furman University in Greenville, SC is seeking a Police Sergeant to serve as a shift commander and public safety officer reporting to the Director of Public Safety. The Sergeant will supervise staff, enforce policies, and oversee security, safety, and traffic services on campus.

The role requires completion of the Criminal Justice Academy, a valid SC Driver's License, and prior university law enforcement experience.

Qualifications

• High School graduation required; 3-5 years in related field preferred.
• Two years experience as a public safety officer at Furman University or 5 years in another university/supervisory role.
• No written disciplinary action in past 2 years.
• Valid SC Driver's License with good driving record.
• Criminal Justice Academy completion required.
• Prior university law enforcement experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs duties of Public Safety Officer and Class1 Certified Officer.
• Supervises shift staff; assigns work; trains and counsels staff; approves arrest decisions; reviews reports; prepares monthly evaluations.
• Manages and conducts case investigations; develops officer knowledge of criminal procedures, laws, and reports.
• Makes presentations to campus groups; represents department in meetings; resolves conflicts with individuals and groups.
• Participates in in-service training; serves as field training officer for new officers.
• Plans, coordinates, and supervises campus special events.
• Completes additional tasks as assigned by the Director (dispatcher, office work, etc.).
• Follows safety procedures.
• Completes performance review processes with supervisor to align with department goals.
• Communicates openly and recognizes colleagues' contributions.
• Maintains up-to-date information about department and university.
