Job summary

Furman University Police Department seeks a Police Sergeant to lead a shift as Public Safety Officer and supervise campus safety operations. The role reports to the Director of Public Safety and may perform dispatcher duties or plain clothes assignments as needed.

The Sergeant conducts investigations, delivers training, and represents the department in campus meetings. A High School diploma and law enforcement credentials are required, with Furman University experience preferred.

Qualifications

• High School graduate with 3 - 5 years experience in related field.
• Must have two years experience as a public safety officer at Furman University and/or 5 years of progressively responsible experience at another university and/or 5 years of supervisory experience at another law enforcement agency.
• Must have no written disciplinary action within the past 2 years (i.e. written record or verbal warning, written warning or suspension).
• Must have satisfactory compliance with job expectations to include but not limited to attendance, punctuality, completion as assignments and other duties as requested.
• Must possess a valid SC Driver’s License with a good driving record.
• Must have completed the Criminal Justice Academy.
• Prior law enforcement experience in a university setting preferred.
• Must have excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Supervises shift staff; staff work assignments; informs staff of policies and procedures and insures compliance; training for new staff; staff development and counseling to improve staff’s performance, correction of performance deficiencies, approves arrest decisions, reviews reports; prepares monthly reports on evaluation of personnel and shift operations.
• Manages and conducts case investigations. Develops officer knowledge of criminal procedures, laws, report writing and investigative skills.
• Makes presentations to campus groups, represents the department in campus meetings, teams and committees. Works with individual and groups in the resolution of conflicts.
• Participates in and assists with in-service training programs. Serves as a field training officer for new officers.
• Plans, coordinates, and supervises campus special events.
• Completes additional task as assigned by the Director which may include assignments to other duties such as dispatcher, office work, community service staff functions, and work in plain clothes assignments.
• Follows safety procedures.
• Completes performance review process with supervisor/employees to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and university goals.
• Communicates openly and recognizes contributions of co-workers and supervisor.
• Pursues professional development to keep pace with demands for services and information; including maintaining up to date information about the department and university.

Job Title: Police Sergeant Job Family: Service Workers Full-Time/Part-Time: Full time Pay Type: Hourly Department: Red Squad Lead Job Summary: The Sergeant serves as a shift commander and public safety officer reporting to the Director of Public Safety. The Sergeant will also be assigned supervisory duties for other security safety operations. Duties are performed in accordance with established policies and procedures regarding law enforcement, security, safety, and traffic services on the university campus.

Relationships

Continuous contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisor, members of other departments, students, general public, and local law enforcement agencies for planning, coordinating, problem solving, presenting information and suggestions related to mutual goals. Parties generally have cooperative attitudes.

Responsibility for Final Decisions

Direct supervision of 3 - 10 employees. Reviews work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines. Spends time planning, scheduling, and assigning priorities of several ongoing assignments. Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures. Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.

Reports To

Director of Public Safety. Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.
