Job summary

Stanford University’s Department of Public Safety is seeking a Sergeant to supervise patrol, investigations, and support units, while coordinating field training and ensuring compliance with laws and university policies.

The Sergeant balances administrative duties with on-ground supervision, responds to critical incidents, and collaborates with campus partners to uphold the university’s commitment to safety and exemplary public service.

Qualifications

• California POST-certified basic police academy completion.
• Minimum three years of full-time experience at a law enforcement agency.
• High school diploma or GED plus 60 college units.
• POST Supervisory school completion within 1 year of hire.
• Not be in violation of Brady v. Maryland.

Responsibilities

• Establish and document performance objectives for unit personnel.
• Provide guidance, support, and discipline of personnel.
• Ensure compliance with law and department policies.
• Supervise unit personnel including events staff and non-sworn roles.
• Prepare daily operations plan and conduct briefings.
• Investigate employee complaints and disciplinary issues.
• Participate in hiring decisions and recruit training.
• Coordinate Field Training for recruits.
• Respond to serious incidents and coordinate with outside agencies as needed.
• Conduct investigations and document information.
• Identify campus trends and adjust enforcement strategies.
• Implement Incident Command System during major incidents.
• Coordinate with Title IX, CAPS, EHS, and other campus partners.
