Job summary

The University System of New Hampshire seeks a full-time police officer to protect people and property on campus in Durham. Under supervision, you will patrol assigned areas, enforce laws and university policies, and participate in crime prevention and community relations.

The role requires you to handle investigations, respond to emergencies, and complete reports while maintaining professionalism, integrity and a positive attitude toward students, staff and visitors.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.
• Ability to project self assurance and certainty, project a positive first impression, express self in writing, react and cope with stressful situations, and evaluate a situation with common sense.
• Demonstrate organizational ability.
• Demonstrated ability to react responsively in emergency situations.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Must qualify annually with designated department weapons based upon the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council Standards.
• Excellent progressive work history.
• Must successfully complete a physical examination and fitness agility test based on the entrance standards as determined by New Police Standards and Training to determine sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
• No criminal record other than minor motor vehicle violations.
• Be even tempered and have a positive attitude with co-workers and community.
• Must possess a valid New Hampshire Driver's License.
• Certification as a fulltime police officer by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council or ability to receive certification within one year of appointment.
• Resourcefulness, tact and skill in dealing with general public and distressed individuals.
• Must successfully pass a Written test, Oral Board examination, Administrative Review/Board, Physical Agility test, and Executive interview with the Chief of Police or his/her designee.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned area, buildings, streets and grounds and enforce motor vehicle and criminal laws.
• Make contacts with the public and other law enforcement officers to obtain information vital to cases, investigations and accidents.
• Perform duties at special events and operate law enforcement equipment.
• Prepare complaints, warrants and reports; conduct investigations and interviews.
• Enforce civil process, control crowds and deescalate volatile situations.
• Respond to emergencies and maintain order in campus communities.
• Collaborate with university police, students, staff, and community partners.
