Position Summary: Portland State University Campus Police Officers are responsible for maintaining peace and public safety through enforcement of laws, City Codes and ordinances, performing traffic control, and providing emergency services on the Portland State University campus and the adjacent community. Campus Police Officers must support the Portland State University mission, provide essential law enforcement functions, and respect the rights and dignity of all individuals. They are expected to interact effectively with the campus and surrounding community, demonstrating trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, communication, justice, fairness, caring, civic virtue, impartiality, and citizenship, while maintaining integrity, ethical values, pride, and professionalism.

The Campus Police Officer will follow the established chain of command and adhere to the following:

  • Be a role model for all PSU core competencies required of all PSU members, including providing excellent customer service.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and training, and keep all required certifications current.
  • Exercise authorities and jurisdiction in accordance with applicable laws and university policy.
  • Follow all appropriate safety guidelines when performing duties.
  • Be knowledgeable of and accountable for all applicable departmental policies.
  • Perform additional and/or modified duties as assigned by a supervisor.
  • Maintain qualifications required by PSU and the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
  • Complete all reports and paperwork as required by management.
  • Conduct effective and sensitive interviews with professionalism.
  • Maintain an On Duty "Daily" notebook of all activities.

The Campus Police Officer is subject to recall at any time to assist in emergencies critical to the university's operation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Lateral Officers:

  • DPSST Oregon Certified as Basic Police or higher.
  • US Citizenship within 18 months of employment.
  • 21 years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license from state of residence.
  • No felony convictions.
  • No violation of any law involving controlled substances.
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Meet minimum medical requirements.
  • Successful completion of Field Training and Evaluation Program.

Entry-level officers:

  • Meet DPSST Minimum Qualifications for Certification as Basic Police within one year of employment.
  • US Citizenship within 18 months of employment.
  • Valid driver’s license from state of residence.

Successful completion of a background investigation and Field Training and Evaluation Program is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Field Training Officer qualified (FTO).
  • 4 years of experience as a police officer.
  • Four-year academic degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Current law enforcement employment in another state, subject to DPSST reciprocity.
  • Certified bilingual proficiency in relevant languages.

Work Days/Hours: Sunday to Saturday, 40 hours per week, schedule varies.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits: Starting salary between $32.42 and $34.03 per hour, negotiable based on experience. PSU offers a comprehensive benefits package.
