Job summary

Qualifications

  • Working towards a Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, facilities management, urban studies, building construction technology or closely related field strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

Campus Planning Intern

The Campus Planning Intern provides support to the departmentresponsible for the design and construction of capital projectsthroughout the Emerson College campus. Reporting to the Director ofReal Estate & Space Planning, the Intern will support thedepartment's efforts in conducting space programming, space layoutand design, light renovations, departmental moves, and space andfacility analysis.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Assist the Director of Real Estate & Space Planning toupdate the college's space management and building model databaseto assure accurate physical space measurement and usedata.
  • Provide assistance with the analysis of the current spaceutilization and integrate into master plan, strategic plan andfacilities planning issues.
  • Make recommendations on improvements to layouts and spaceassignments.
  • Perform space feasibility and fit studies.
  • Attend user meetings, prepare meeting notes documenting spaceplanning issues, draft scopes of work for planning studies(internal or consultant), prepare planning analyses, recommend andprepare solutions for space needs, prepare plans.
  • Assist in the development of project feasibility reports byevaluating user needs, providing potential space reconfigurationdesigns and other deliverables.
  • Identify options for space efficiency to meet central andacademic program priorities.
  • Identify and present strategies for sequencing spacemoves.
  • Prepare presentation materials for senior leadership on currentspace issues and effectively communicate information graphicallyand verbally to inform decision-making.
  • Assist in the development of departmental master plans. Gatherand evaluate space utilization data, and prepare and presentdashboards, plans and analyses.
  • Document faculty and staff location data for both Workday andthe 911 system. Update the system as needed when employees onboardand depart, and when moves happen within the department ordepartmental moves.
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Real Estate & SpacePlanning, , the Campus Planning Intern will work with Collegedepartments to develop understanding of space needs, programrequirements for renovation and relocation projects.
  • Assist in designing schematic and feasibility plans to optimizespace efficiency for smaller renovation projects while followingbuilding codes and AIA guidelines.


QUALIFICATIONS - Qualifications are deemed required orpreferred and represent what is needed to effectively performjob.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent experiencerequired.
  • Previous internship or work experience in facilities, design,architecture or construction required.
  • Working towards a Bachelor's degree in architecture,engineering, facilities management, urban studies, buildingconstruction technology or closely related field stronglypreferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - May be representative,but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilitiescommonly associated with the job.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods ofSpace Management
  • Advanced Revit skill level
  • Basic knowledge of building codes; ability to inspect anddetermine the adaptability and cost of renovation of existingstructures.
  • Familiarity with space planning and facilitydatabases
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Intermediate AutoCad experience
  • Knowledge of, and experience using; MS Office software, AdobeSuite, AutoCAD preferred
  • Familiarity with database development and space managementsoftware (e.g., Archibus and REVIT) supports the evaluation andallocation of space on campus while planning for long term spaceneeds preferred
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills to communicateeffectively with individuals at all levels of the organization aswell as outside consultants and contractors.
  • Analytical skills necessary to evaluate data, proposals andplans, develop project ideas and conduct feasibility studieseffectively. Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and followsolutions through to completion.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at one time. Ability topay close attention to detail and quality while simultaneouslyresponding to urgent requests.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills including theability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Presentation preparation and delivery skills, ability topresent in group settings.
  • Assist with furniture layouts, specifications,coordination
  • Support interior finishes selection, coordination, anddocumentation
  • Help track project schedules and deliverables

IN-OFFICE EXPECTATIONS
This position requires an in-person presence on the Boston Campusduring the work week. This assignment ends in March 2027.

The compensation for this position is $25 per hour, with a minimumof 20 hours per week, with increasing hours during thesummer.
