Job summary

Tidewater Tech in Norfolk, VA is hiring a Maintenance Technician to perform general and preventative maintenance on campus facilities. You will handle basic repairs, perform cleaning tasks, monitor parking lot safety, and respond to maintenance requests in a timely manner.

Ideal candidates have at least 3 years of commercial property maintenance experience, a high school diploma or GED, and willingness to work flexible hours including nights or weekends.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent on‑the‑job experience.
  • Trade School Certification (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical) in related field is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general and preventative maintenance for campus buildings.
  • Handle basic repairs (locks, doors, windows, leaks) as needed.
  • Perform cleaning activities to maintain building upkeep.
  • Monitor and maintain parking lot cleanliness and safety.
  • Remove hazards during inclement weather and ensure safe access.
  • Maintain tidy and functional facilities.
  • Inspect and monitor potential problems for timely resolution.
  • Respond to repair or maintenance requests promptly.
  • Communicate with supervisor to prioritize work requests.
  • Use power and hand tools safely for repairs and maintenance.
  • Keep accurate maintenance records for documentation.
  • Follow safety procedures during activities.
  • Safeguard electrical panels, meters, HVAC units and related equipment.
  • Provide proper warnings during repairs (Wet Floor, Closed for Repairs).
  • Complete other duties and special projects as assigned.

Full‑Time Schedule: Monday – Thursday: 7:00am-4:00 pm Monday-Thursday

Please note, on occasion, work hours may be subject to change based on business needs, and flexibility in scheduling may be required.

Compensation:up to $22/hour

Position Purpose

This position is responsible for general/routine and preventative maintenance, basic repair and maintenance services to campus office buildings to include, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, to include cleaning floors, dusting, disposing of trash properly, etc. to ensure upkeep of the building and campus property.

Job Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform general/routine and preventative maintenance for the campus.
  • Handle basic repairs, including minor fixes such as fixing broken locks, doors, windows or leaks, etc. as needed or assigned.
  • Perform cleaning activities such as cleaning floors, dusting, disposing of trash properly, etc. to ensure upkeep of the building and campus property.
  • Monitor and maintain parking lot to ensure it is free of trash, hazards and debris
  • In the event of inclement weather, remove hazards (ice, snow, etc.) from entrances and entryways.
  • Ensure facilities are tidy and functional.
  • Identify, inspect, and monitor potential problems to ensure proper attention is given and the matter is prioritized and remedied as needed and in a timely manner.
  • Respond to repair or maintenance requests in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisor(s) or corporate Facilities Manager to ensure work requests and issues are prioritized and resolved.
  • Use equipment, including power tools, hand tools, electric tools, and plumbing tools safely and effectively when conducting repairs or maintenance activities.
  • Keep an accurate maintenance record to ensure proper documentation of repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Follow safety procedures when conducting repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Safeguard and take appropriate precautions to ensure electrical panels, meters, roof access, HVAC units, and other equipment/tools are not accessible to non-authorized personnel who are not involved in repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure any repairs and maintenance activities are conducted with minimal disruption and inconvenience and proper warnings (i.e. Wet Floor sign, Closed for Repairs sign, Lock Out/Tag Out notices) are in place and visible to all.
  • Perform and complete other job‑related duties, assignments, special projects as assigned by Supervisor.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED, or equitable on‑the‑job experience.
  • Trade School Certification (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, etc.) in any/all the related field’s a plus.

Experience/Skills

  • A minimum of three (3) years in general maintenance of commercial property strongly desired.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule to include nights, weekends, and possible overnights as necessary or as requested by Supervisor.
  • Muse be able to work manually and perform physical activities that require manual dexterity, and hand‑eye coordination.
  • Must be able to comply with and adhere to safety standards and requirements.
  • Detail‑oriented, analytical, highly organized, and have the ability to multi‑task and work well under pressure.
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity, strong work ethic, and professionalism.
  • Persuasive and effective verbal and written communication skills, with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Highly motivated and goal‑oriented, with strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and as collaborative team member and have exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer skills are required with proficiency in MS Office applications including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and Teams, internet access and research, ordering materials online.
  • Ability and willingness to travel locally or overnight for business purposes.

Schedule:

  • Monday – Friday 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM

Physical Demands

Individuals may sit or stand as needed for prolonged periods. May require walking primarily on a level surface throughout the day. May require sitting at a desk, typing, entering data, viewing a computer monitor or reading documents for long periods of time throughout the day. May be required to push/pull/lift up to 50-100 pounds when lifting or moving files, tools or equipment. May be required to bend, kneel, stoop, and reach in the process of performing job duties. May be required to work in conditions that may be exposed to heat or cold, tight or obstructed spaces (vents), areas with high elevation (roofs), or objects/areas prone to electrical currents (electrical panels).
