Job summary

The New School University Center Library is seeking student worker Library Assistants to support circulation, shelving, and reference tasks on campus in New York City. This in-person role requires reliable attendance, strong customer service, and the ability to assist during busy periods.

Responsibilities include checking in/out materials, helping patrons locate resources, and supporting opening and closing procedures. Prior library experience is helpful but not required.

Qualifications

• Excellent customer service skills and clear communication.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Adaptable and reliable, able to report schedule changes to supervisor.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy when handling materials.
• Ability to engage with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to work without close supervision or alone.
• Experience with Google Suite (Calendar, Gmail, Docs, Sheets).
• Physical ability to lift items and push loaded book carts.

Responsibilities

• Provide excellent customer service at the circulation desk and assist patrons.
• Check-in/check-out library materials using library software.
• Maintain stacks and shelf order; assist with shelving and in-housing books.
• Answer telephone inquiries and help patrons locate items in the stacks and catalog.
• Assist with library printing and basic scanning/reserve processing.
• Support opening/closing procedures and daily library operations.
