Job summary

San Diego State University is seeking a skilled Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to support HVAC and mechanical systems across campus. You will perform hands-on maintenance, installations, and preventive care, contributing to safe and efficient building operations.

The role emphasizes troubleshooting, emergency response, and collaboration with journey-level trades staff. Standard hours are Monday–Friday, with overtime as needed to maintain critical campus infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Experience analyzing and responding to emergency situations.
• Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems and renovations.
• Effective communication with a diverse range of individuals at all levels of the organization.
• Ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures.
• Prior experience in a large multi-building facility operation performing maintenance and repair work.
• Completion of training/coursework in HVAC, electrical theory or mechanical equipment/systems preferred.
• Journey-level skill in one trade with strong skills in other applicable trades.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment, plumbing systems, cooling towers, pumps, motors and related components.
• Respond to service requests and emergencies by restoring air flow, temperature, humidity, and repairing utility distribution systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, and troubleshooting to maximize equipment performance and minimize downtime.
• Assist HVAC renovations and equipment installations, including piping, ductwork, wiring, thermostats, and related systems.
• Support trades personnel with maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction projects; maintain mechanical rooms and related equipment.
