Job summary

North Carolina Central University in Durham, a historic institution known as The City of Medicine, seeks a Grounds Maintenance Worker to keep campus safe, clean, and well-maintained. You will perform mowing, trimming, pruning, and plant bed maintenance, and apply herbicides as needed to preserve landscaping quality.

The role is permanent, full-time, on-site, and requires physical stamina and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of groundskeeping and horticultural practices.
• Knowledge of cultivation, pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements for trees and shrubs.
• Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to multitask effectively while frequently bending, stooping, and performing other physical activities.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and follow assignments through to completion or resolution.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion when solving problems.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to understand and follow written instructions.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine mowing, string trimming, edging, and blowing as required to maintain lawns and landscaped areas.
• Trims and shapes shrubs to the appropriate height and appearance using hand and power trimmers.
• Performs general groundskeeping and landscape maintenance duties as assigned to maintain the appearance, safety, and cleanliness of University grounds.
