Since 1966, Indiana University(IU) Campus Bus Service has been providing bus service on theBloomington campus. IU Bloomington's 1940-acre campus is oftenconsidered one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation and isset in USA Today's #2 Best College Town in America.
IU Bloomington is home to over 48,000 undergraduate and graduatestudents and over 19,000 faculty, staff, and part-timeemployees.
Campus Bus provides transportation to over 3 million rides a yearand operates a 6-route system with approximately 30 buses, 50 busoperators, 4 mechanics, and a management team. It has along-standing partnership with the local transit system, furtherextending its reach and resources.
Campus Bus is a business unit within Auxiliary Business Services(ABS). ABS operate in a shared services model that supportsfinance, human resources, payroll, and marketing needs of CampusBus.
Job Summary
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Operates a public transportation vehicle in a safe andefficient manner while maintaining positive customer relations withpassengers, drivers of other vehicles on the street, andpedestrians.
- Monitors the safety and mechanical operation of the publictransportation vehicle assigned by constant attention to safety andmechanical devices and warning signals, such as the following (forthe purposes of illustration only): the speedometer, watertemperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, engine warning lights andbuzzers, etc.
- Operates mechanical and electronic devices on the publictransportation vehicle, including front and rear doors, wheelchairlift or ramp, wheelchair securement devices, bus kneeling device,radio, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) devices, passengercounters, destination signs, public address systems, heating andventilating equipment, safety devices and warning lights, etc.
- Conforms to all University, local, state, and federal laws,rules, and regulations applicable to public transportationoperations, including (for the purposes of illustration only),performing the following: pre-and post-trip inspections of thepublic transportation vehicle assigned, ADA required announcementsand assistance for passengers with disabilities, etc.
- Prepares logs, forms, and reports on the ridership andoperations of the assigned public transportation vehicle.
- May be assigned other duties not related to operating a publictransportation vehicle when their services are not needed fordriving, such as clerical, courier, public transit informationduties, etc.

Qualifications
This position is posted at the Intermediate Career Level butmay be filled at the Foundational Career Level depending onthe candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, theduties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank.Please see the qualifications for each level listed below.
Intermediate Career Level Requirements
EDUCATION
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)AND
- Completion of bus operator training program.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 1 year of experience driving public transportationvehicles.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- CDL license class B with passenger and air brake endorsementsand ability to be insured by Indiana University. These are SafetySensitive positions as defined by the Federal TransitAdministration (FTA) and are therefore subject to all current andfuture FTA Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations upon date ofhire.

- Ability to successfully complete required classroom and on thestreet training program during the probationary period.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires stationary positioning for long periods of time.It also requires a CDL-B or chauffer's level driver's licenseissued by the State of Indiana and the ability to be insured byIndiana University. This role requires the ability to move objectsweighing up to 25 pounds The person in this role must be able toperform the essential tasks with or without an accommodation.
Additional Information
During summer furlough period, alternative work assignments may beavailable.
- Employees who hold a CDL who are not 21 years of age arerestricted to operating university vehicles within Monroe Countyonly (INLOCC restriction)
- CDL holders under 21 years of age are required to operateintrastate commerce only (State of Indiana restriction)
Candidate must independently obtain CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit), class B, with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements, andinsurable by Indiana University. The training must be completed in an 8-week time frame. These are safety sensitive positions asdefined by the Federal Transit Administration and therefore subjectto all current and future FTA drug and alcohol testing requirementsupon date of hire.
