Description
Position Summary (2-3 sentences):
Under the direction of the Camp Aquatics Director, The Swim Instructor’s key function is to promote the charitable mission of the Westport Weston Family Y by providing direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes. The Swim Instructor will also build strong lasting relationships with members, employees and volunteers that will build healthy lifestyles. The Swim Instructor must possess good organizational, communication and team building skills. The Swim Instructor shall make relationship-building a top priority.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures the safety of every individual at the YMCA, both in and around the pool as well as the rest of the facility.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Supervise all children and adults entrusted to the care of the instructor.
- Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Maintain records as required (e.g. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; help them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refer students and parents to other programs.
- Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Report 15 minutes prior to scheduled hours in proper uniform (trunks/suit, provided Swim Instructor shirt).
- Notify supervisor of before securing a substitute if you cannot fulfill your shift and provide lesson plan for substitute. The shift is the responsibility of the staff to get it covered.
Other camp responsibilities:
- Camp hours are typically from 9:00am-3:00pm. We have drop off from 8-9, where you would be helping the children get from their parent's car to the camp site and pick up from 3-4, where you would be helping the children back to their parents' car. Pick up/drop off is not required but is a huge part of camp and a big help, as well as a chance for additional hours.
Qualifications
- Minimum age of 16.
- Certifications: CPR, AED, First Aid. YMCA or Red Cross Swim Instructor, Lifeguard certification preferred.
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Must possess values consistent with the mission of the YMCA.
