Job summary

DeKalb Health is seeking a Lead Camp Counselor to supervise camp participants, plan daily activities, and model positive behavior within the YMCA program. You will guide camp counselors, manage behavior, communicate with parents, and implement scheduled activities and lessons.

Responsibilities include staff development, program operations, and ensuring safety and compliance with KDHE and YMCA standards. This role requires flexible hours, weekend and evening availability, and a strong commitment

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 6 months of related experience with school-age children or 15 hours of academic credit.
• Lifeguards must have qualifications and 3 years lifeguarding experience.
• Wranglers must have 2 years field experience or certification.
• Tower/Ropes must have Alpine Tower Training/Ropes certification.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain relationships to inspire trust and support staff connection to the program, branch, and mission of the YMCA.
• Hold staff and volunteers accountable for following program procedures and policies.
• Assist and guide staff to support positive behavior management and staff-child relationships.
• Provide ongoing feedback and coaching, and maintain documentation of successes and areas for improvement.
• Provide feedback to the direct supervisor for end-of-season reviews.
• Report any issue or concerns immediately to the direct supervisor.
• Effectively communicate the mission, vision, and values of the YMCA.
• Supervise and implement quality activity plans per KDHE and YMCA.
• Provide content for camp activity calendar and social media.
• Be actively engaged in program activities and be a role model for staff.
• Guide behavior management issues to support counselors and youth.
• Maintain behavior documentation and communicate challenges to the supervisor.
• Maintain roster and ratio at all times.
• Oversee organization and inventory of equipment and supplies.
• Review emergency/medical plans and accommodations for youth.
• Apply policies respectfully in staff/parent/participant situations.
• Respond to accidents following policies and documentations.
• Provide supply requests to the supervisor timely.
• All other duties as assigned.
