Job summary

McClatchy Content Innovation Lab seeks a Camp & Country Content Specialist to write and edit high-quality outdoor content for a national audience. You will craft guides, trail tips, gear reviews and features, using analytics and AI tools to surface trends and shape coverage across diverse regions including California.

You'll work with a collaborative team to test new formats and distribution strategies, driving engagement and readers’ connection with the outdoors.

Join McClatchys Content Innovation Lab as specialist for Camp & Country a new digital destination for outdoor enthusiasts, weekend adventurers and anyone looking to spend more time in nature.

At McClatchy, were blending our tradition of trusted journalism with a digital-first, data-driven approach. As a Camp & Country specialist, youll write engaging, high-quality content that covers everything from trail conditions and seasonal guides to backcountry tips, gear reviews and stories that shape the outdoor scene. Youll use audience insights and AI-enabled tools to surface trends and produce national content that resonates with outdoor enthusiasts across the Pacific Northwest, Heartland, California, Gulf Coast and beyond.

Who you are:

• A creative storyteller with a passion for outdoor recreation, adventure and lifestyle and the demonstrated knowledge to pitch, research, report, write, edit and fact-check content.
• Experienced in digital content creation at a high volume, with strong writing, editing and organizational skills.
• Comfortable using data and AI-powered tools to guide your work and amplify your impact.
• Collaborative, curious, and excited to experiment with new ways to engage audiences.

What youll bring:

• The position requires a combination of subject matter expertise and experience equivalent to a bachelors degree, including education, experience, skills and knowledge necessary to perform the job.
• 3+ years of professional experience in content creation, writing or journalism.
• Strong writing, editing and organizational skills with the ability to produce high-quality content on deadline.
• Inquisitive mindset with a constant flow of ideas and creative approaches to content creation.
• Adaptability and flexibility to experiment relentlessly and pivot quickly based on results.
• Collaborative spirit with a proven track record of working effectively in team environments.

What we’ll bring:

• The anticipated pay range for this position is between $60,000-90,000 a year. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on the job‑related knowledge, department equity, skills, experience and relevant education.
