The Salvation Army is seeking a Camp Cook to manage meal preparation for large groups in Burkesville, KY. This role involves planning menus, cooking meals, and ensuring kitchen cleanliness in a camp setting. Ideal candidates will have culinary experience and the ability to coordinate kitchen staff. About this opportunity:
Plans, prepares, cooks and serves nutritional meals and snacks in accordance with established guidelines and schedules; ensures all meals are prepared and served in a safe and presentable manner; cleans kitchen facilities, equipment, and appliances; maintains inventory of kitchen supplies and food in a neat and orderly manner; assigns, instructs and monitors work of Camp Kitchen Assistant.
Key responsibilities:
Must follow all Site and Food Service Accreditation Standards set forth by American Camp Association.
Oversees preparation of food.
Ensures that enough food is prepared based on the number of people to be served and that food is prepared in a timely manner as scheduled.
Prepares and cooks food as the menu indicates utilizing frying, boiling, broiling, steaming, roasting of meat, poultry, seafood, fish, vegetables, salads, soups and gravies.
Cleans, cooks, and prepares a variety of foods and beverages utilizing kitchen equipment, utensils, and supplies in accordance with acceptable and economical cooking methods.
Prepares foods including washing and peeling.
Bakes breads, pastries, muffins, etc.
Serves food and beverages in a presentable manner; prepares plates for infants or persons requiring additional assistance.
Prepares snacks and prepares plates of food for people eating after normal serving hours.
Assigns, instructs, and monitors work of Kitchen Assistant; ensures meals are prepared as planned.
Maintains a high degree of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room; ensures that all meals are prepared in a safe manner; ensures all kitchen personnel practice proper personal hygiene; ensures compliance with health regulations.
Assists in routine sanitation of the kitchen and related equipment such as clean and maintain all food-preparation and storage areas.
Supervises the cleaning of serving and dining room dishes.
Kitchen must be kept clean and orderly including cleaning of stoves, oven and grill after each meal.
Plans menus and purchases food and supplies necessary for the preparation and serving of nutritional meals.
Works with DCCC/Associate Camp Director to maintain proper inventory.
Maintains proper supply and orderliness of kitchen stock inventory in order to meet the needs of the kitchen; orders, receives, and processes food purchases; verifies that invoices are accurate and submits for further processing.
Stores, refrigerates, and freezes foods in a safe and economical manner; monitors expiration dates on all foods ensuring proper disposal of food with expired dates.
Stores food and leftovers at proper temperature.
Cook supervisor will give DCCC/Associate Camp Director the list of items and amounts used for each meal (date each paper).
Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
Keeps personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection.
Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.
Assists in coordinating and carrying-out arrangements for programs and special events.
Supervises volunteers assisting in preparing and serving meals and cleaning of kitchen equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What we are looking for in you:
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Some physical requirements of the Camp Cook position could be endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate cooking equipment and activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
