Description

The Camp Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all waterfront and pool activities, ensuring a safe and engaging aquatic program for campers. This role includes supervising lifeguards, enforcing safety protocols, and implementing swim lessons and water-based recreation. The Aquatic Coordinator plays a vital role in promoting water safety while fostering a fun and inclusive environment for all campers.

Key Responsibilities

Safety & Supervision:

  • Ensure the safety of all campers and staff during aquatic activities, following YMCA and ACA (American Camp Association) standards.
  • Supervise, schedule, and train lifeguards and swim instructors.
  • Conduct daily safety checks of all aquatic areas, including pools, lakes, docks, and equipment.
  • Maintain proper lifeguard coverage and respond to emergency situations as needed.
  • Monitor weather conditions and adjust aquatic programming accordingly.

Program Implementation:

  • Develop and oversee aquatic programs, including swim lessons, free swim, boating, and water games.
  • Ensure programs align with YMCA’s mission, focusing on skill development, confidence-building, and water safety.
  • Provide direct instruction for swim lessons and train staff in proper teaching techniques.

Administrative & Compliance:

  • Maintain accurate records of swim assessments, incident reports, and lifeguard certifications.
  • Ensure all safety protocols comply with local health department regulations and YMCA policies.
  • Manage inventory of aquatic equipment and supplies, ensuring proper storage and maintenance.
  • Assist with camper swim evaluations and ensure appropriate swim level placements.

Leadership & Teamwork:

  • Act as a role model for campers and staff, fostering a culture of safety, respect, and inclusivity.
  • Communicate effectively with camp leadership, parents, and staff regarding aquatic program updates and safety concerns.
  • Provide ongoing training and support for aquatic staff to enhance skills and professionalism.
Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Current Lifeguard Certification (YMCA or Red Cross) required.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or ability to obtain before camp starts).
  • Preferred: WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certification or experience in swim instruction.
  • Experience supervising lifeguards and managing aquatic programs.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous experience working in a summer camp, YMCA, or recreational aquatic setting.
  • Knowledge of boating, canoeing, or waterfront safety procedures.
  • Experience with adaptive or inclusive swim programs is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift/move equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to remain in the water for extended periods and respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
