Job summary

Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee is seeking a Fire Alarm Technician to inspect, test, maintain, and repair fire alarm systems and life-safety equipment across several facilities. You will perform annual inspections, monthly control-panel tests, and preventive maintenance, while documenting actions and coordinating with contractors as needed.

Licensing and certifications are required or pursued, including NICET Level I or higher; a valid driver's license is required and state licenses

Qualifications

  • NICET Level I or higher in Fire Alarm Systems preferred.

Responsibilities

The position ensures compliance with NFPA standards, local fire codes, and OSHA regulations while maintaining accurate documentation of inspections, testing, and repairs.TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)1.Performs annual inspections and functional testing of building fire alarm systems, medical alarms, and life-safety devices.2.Conducts monthly tests of fire alarm control panels and system batteries to ensure reliability.3.Inspects, tests, and repairs emergency exit signs, emergency lighting, and related safety equipment.4.Completes preventive maintenance and performs basic troubleshooting and repairs.5.Maintains detailed reports and documentation in compliance with regulatory standards.6.Collaborates with and oversees outside contractors during monthly and annual inspections or service work.7.Obtains and maintains required certifications, including NICET certification and applicable state or local licenses.8.Stays current with industry codes, NFPA standards, and best practices for fire alarm and life-safety systems.9.Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):High school diploma or GED. Technical or vocational training in electronics, fire/life-safety systems, or a related field and two or more years of experience in fire alarm inspection, testing, or repair are preferred.LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):Licensing Requirements:Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to assigned facilities.Must be able to obtain and maintain required NICET certification and other applicable state or local licenses within eighteen (18) months of hire. The timeframe may be extended when the employee is actively pursuing the required certification and demonstrating satisfactory progress toward completion.NICET Level I or higher in Fire Alarm Systems preferred.
