Job Description and Duties

While working for the Caltrans Division of Equipment the incumbent will work under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor and/or a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker. The incumbent works in a shop and/or field environment, constructing, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and servicing various equipment used in the Department's fleet. The incumbent completes records and reports, and uses computer equipment for various tasks. May assist in instructing or directing helpers, apprentices, or other employees. The incumbent must possess a valid Class C driver's license and will assume responsibility for reasonable safeguards, proper use and handling of materials and tools, equipment and facilities at all times using personal protective equipment (PPE). The incumbent may work outside or travel to assist at field mechanic’s locations or highway maintenance stations, and must be able to work in inclement weather, including severe cold or heat. The incumbent may be required to assist with the daily operation of the shop.

Working Conditions

Position located at 518 Crowley Lake Pl., Mammoth Lakes, Mono County. The incumbent works in a shop and/or field environment and may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, hazardous materials, and various temperatures. The incumbent may need to travel, rotate shifts, work different hours or days, and may be required to work during emergency or declared emergency situations.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must have a valid California Class C driver's license.
  • Must pass a drug screening.
  • Must be eligible based on the Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic exam or be on the state examination list.
  • Must meet the minimum qualifications listed in the Class Specification.
