Job summary

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in San Francisco seeks a dynamic Business Development Manager to lead California BD and support the Global Funds practice. The role balances dedicated practice-group BD with broad cross-practice efforts across the firm’s California offices.

You will partner with attorneys to drive strategy, market research, pitches, and profile-raising, coordinating with PR, Events, and other teams to elevate market visibility.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of relevant business development experience in the legal market, preferably in a top 200 law firm.
• Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Liberal Arts or related field desired
• Excellent analytical and research skills and the ability to process information from a wide variety of sources
• Extraordinary attention to detail
• Excellent oral and written communications skills
• Experience working independently as well as within cross-functional teams in a collaborative, professional environment
• Ability to work Pacific Time hours and coordinate with California offices

Responsibilities

• Serve as the dedicated BD resource for the Firm's Global Funds practice, partnering with CA- and globally-based attorneys to drive strategy and measurable results.
• Prepare and oversee tailored pitches, RFP responses, presentations, and credentials with high-quality materials.
• Conduct market, competitive, and client research to inform strategic decisions and identify revenue opportunities.
• Manage award and directory submissions (Chambers, Legal 500) and drive profile-raising with PR and Events teams.
• Support client-targeting, cross-selling, and client feedback programs to strengthen relationships and growth.
• Build trusted BD support relationships with California attorneys to drive regional growth in Pacific Time hours.
• Lead California-focused profile-raising through events, media coverage, speaking opportunities, seminars, sponsorships, and webinars.
