Job summary

Brown Sugar Bakery in Gardena, California is seeking a creative, detail-oriented Cake Decorator to join our bakery team on an as-needed basis and paid hourly. The ideal candidate has experience decorating custom celebration cakes, working with buttercream and fondant, and transforming customer inspiration photos into finished products.

This position is ideal for an experienced decorator seeking flexible, project-based scheduling.

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of cake decorating experience preferred.
• Experience with buttercream frosting and fondant.
• Ability to decorate custom cakes independently.
• Experience with tiered cakes and cake support systems preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and time management.
• Knowledge of proper food handling and sanitation.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• California Food Handler Card required within the applicable timeframe.

Responsibilities

• Decorate custom birthday cakes, celebration cakes, and specialty orders.
• Prepare, fill, frost, and finish cakes to bakery standards.
• Create buttercream designs, borders, lettering, and decorative finishes.
• Work with fondant, edible images, and specialty cake decorations.
• Stack and assemble multi-layer and tiered cakes.
• Reproduce customer inspiration designs while maintaining quality.
• Complete orders within established production deadlines.
• Maintain clean and sanitary decorating stations.
• Communicate decorating timelines and supply needs to management.
• Assist with other bakery production tasks when needed.

Schedule and compensation

• $25–$28 per hour, depending on experience.
• Part-time, on-call position.
• Hours vary based on custom cake orders.
• Advance scheduling whenever possible.
• Some weekend availability required.
• Paid as a W-2 employee, with legally required payroll deductions and benefits.
