Job summary

The Fleet Science Center in San Diego is seeking a Cafe Team Member to deliver a welcoming guest experience, provide menu knowledge, and ensure every order is accurate. You will operate the POS, assist in light food preparation, stock displays, and keep the cafe clean and inviting while working a flexible schedule that includes early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Greet guests and ensure welcoming environment.
  • Provide menu knowledge and upsell daily specials.
  • Operate POS accurately and transact payments.
  • Coordinate orders between kitchen and guests.
  • Stock and display beverages and grab-and-go items.
  • Assist BOH with light prep during peak hours.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation; follow health standards.
  • Follow FIFO and temperature checks for displays.
  • Cross-train on concessions to cover Fleet operations.
  • Dish washing as needed.

Job description

TheFleet Science Center's CafeTeam Member plays a key role in creating a welcoming and memorable experiencefor everyguest.Inadditionto providing exceptional customer service, the Cafe Team Memberensuresallorders areaccurate, handlestransactionsand merchandising,assistsin light food preparation, andmaintainsa clean,inviting environment. This position supports both dailyoperationsand concessions toprovide a seamless guest experience.Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Reports to: Assistant Director of Business Operations.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities, including mental requirements of position:


  • Guest Experience:Providesa high levelof hospitality by greeting guests, answering menu questions with expert product knowledge, and ensuring a welcoming environment.

  • Sales:Maximizes sales potential by usingsuggestive selling techniques(e.g., suggesting pairings, daily specials, or add-ons) to enhance the guest's meal.

  • Financial Accuracy:Operatesthe Point of Sale (POS) system with precision; performscash handling, card processing, and drawer reconciliationaccording to company standards.

  • Order Coordination:Acts as the bridge between the kitchen and the guest;ensuresall orders (dine-in,take-out, or delivery) areaccurate, complete, and presented professionally.

  • Merchandising & Display:Stocks andmaintainshot/cold cases, grab-and-go displays, and beverage stations; ensures all signage and pricing areaccurateand visible.

  • Light Food Prep:Assists the BOH (Back of House) team with basic prep (assembling bowls/wraps, portioning sauces, or packaging pizza) during peak hours or as needed.

  • Cleanliness & Sanitation:Maintainsa pristine shopping and dining environment; frequently sanitizes high-touch surfaces, clears tables, and follows Health Department safety standards.

  • Compliance: Completes temperature checks for display cases and follows FIFO (First In, First Out) rotation for all retail and prepared food items.

  • Concessions Support:Cross-train on concessions stand to ensure full coverage of Fleet operations.

  • Dish Support:Assists with washing dishes as needed or assigned.

Tools and equipment used to perform this position:

Physical Requirements of this Position:

Medium work: Must be able to stand and walk for the duration of a shift; must be able to lift 30–50 pounds (e.g., restocking beverage crates or moving displays). Requires frequent reaching, bending, and fine motor skills for operating touch-screen POS systems and packaging food.


Business Location Presence:

This position requires physical presence at the business location during all assigned working hours to adequately perform all duties.


Experience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:


  • Preferred:1+ years of experience in retail, food service, ora cash-handling role.

    • Alternative:Candidates with no prior experience will be considered if theydemonstratea high energy level and a "guest-first" attitude.



  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to remain calm, professional, and friendly under pressure.

  • Mustpossess(or be able to obtainonfirstday) a validFood Handler's Permitas well as an RBS certificate

  • Ability to quickly learn ingredients, allergens, and preparation methods toassistguests with dietary restrictions.

  • Ability to handle currency quickly and accurately; basic mental math for making change and calculating totals.

  • Ability to double-check order accuracy andmaintainthe aesthetic "look" of the front-facing food displays.
