Job summary

Solano County is seeking a Cadastral Mapping Technician II to review codes, laws and recorded documents, and to create and maintain district and property maps using GIS and CAD tools. The role requires interpreting legal descriptions and updating mapping records, with opportunities for permanent or limited-term positions.

Two years of CAD/GIS experience and 30/45 units in related subjects are needed; a certificate in AutoCAD or GIS is also acceptable. Deadline 10/16/2026; EO/AA policy applies.

THE POSITION

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Cadastral Mapping Technician II is the Journey level in this series. Incumbents perform mapping duties read and interpret written boundary descriptions on parcel and other maps employing GIS, mechanical and CAD drafting. This class is distinguished from the Cadastral Mapping Technician III by the latter’s ability to provide instruction, assign and review work and maintain standards for other workers.

The eligible list created as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill full-time and part-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur throughout the County.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate has two or more years editing in ArcGIS Pro against an enterprise geodatabase, comfortable with attribute and geometry edits, topology and closure checks, and versioned data. They can read a recorded parcel map, final map, or legal description well enough to confirm that a parcel’s GIS geometry matches the record, and they understand address data i.e. address points, centerline ranges and aliases, and how a locator uses them to geocode. They can compare two versions of a dataset and report what changed using FME, Python, ModelBuilder, or SQL. CAD experience is useful for reading and georeferencing engineers’ drawings, but the daily work is in GIS.

Experience with parcels, addresses, or recorded maps in a county Assessor, Recorder, Surveyor, Planning, GIS office, at a title company or civil engineering firm, is preferred, as is any exposure to elections geography such as voter address geocoding or precinct boundaries. Much of the County’s parcel and address data is maintained by a contracted vendor, so the candidate should be comfortable working with vendors: checking monthly deliverables, logging corrections, verifying fixes, and writing a short monthly summary a manager can act on.

Experience:

Two years of experience in CAD or GIS with experience in civil drafting or cartography related to interpreting legal property descriptions and drawing scale maps.

Education/Training:

Completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter units of academic coursework from an accredited college or university in civil drafting, surveying, trigonometry, geometry, and computer aided design/drawing.

OR

Certificate/diploma of completion of a beginning to intermediate level either in an AUTOCAD or GIS Course Program from an accredited technical school or program.
