Actalent in Woburn, MA is seeking a CAD Designer to develop mechanical and electrical designs in SolidWorks, focusing on sheet metal and complex assemblies, from concept through production. You will balance performance, quality, cost and schedule while actively contributing to continuous improvement.
This on-site role partners with cross-functional teams, supports production, and may involve occasional travel. A BS ME or equivalent and 3+ years of SolidWorks experience are required.
Qualifications
- BSME or equivalent education with substantial directly applicable experience.
- At least 3 years hands-on CAD modeling/drawing for mechanical assemblies; SolidWorks preferred.
- Ability to manage large CAD assemblies (roughly 100 custom parts + 800+ off-the-shelf).
- Strong SolidWorks proficiency for 3D modeling, assembly creation and drawings.
- Experience designing sheet metal enclosures and components.
- Working knowledge of PLM software.
- Working knowledge of MRP software; Oracle Cloud is a plus.
- Knowledge of sheet metal hardware as fittings and hoses.
- Independent work style with good prioritization.
- Strong problem solving and risk analysis skills.

This role focuses on sheet metal design, complex mechanical assemblies, and product specifications while balancing performance, quality, cost, and schedule. The CAD Designer supports products from early concept through development and into production, actively contributing to continuous improvement and risk mitigation in a growing engineering environment.

The CAD Designer supports products from early concept through development and into production, actively contributing to continuous improvement and risk mitigation in a growing engineering environment.
- Develop mechanical and electrical designs in SolidWorks based on rough sketches, design concepts, verbal instructions, and customer drawings with minimal engineering supervision.
- Design sheet metal components and enclosures that meet product specifications while evaluating trade-offs between performance, functionality, quality, cost, and schedule.
- Ensure that cost, performance, and schedule goals are achieved and actively manage risk mitigation efforts throughout the design process.
- Investigate pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, interchangeability, weight, tolerance stack-up, and material availability.
- Provide alternative and optional design approaches during the preliminary stages of design to support decision-making and optimize product performance.
- Create new item records and bills of materials (BOMs) for new and existing designs, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Build complex assembly models in SolidWorks, including mechanical assemblies with numerous custom and off-the-shelf components.
- Produce detailed drawings in SolidWorks with proper dimensioning and geometric tolerancing in accordance with engineering standards.
- Follow established engineering and documentation procedures, and drive continuous improvement by updating procedures applicable to your area as necessary.
- Provide product support from early concept through product development and throughout production, collaborating with cross-functional teams as needed.
- Use engineering tools such as PLM and MRP software to manage product data and support manufacturing and supply chain activities.
- Apply technical problem-solving skills to analyze system risks, identify options, and make recommendations that improve product design and reliability.
- Utilize Microsoft Office software on a daily basis for documentation, communication, and data analysis.
- Travel occasionally, typically less than 5% per year, including possible domestic and international trips for project or product support.
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), or similar education with substantial directly applicable experience.
- At least 3 years of hands‑on experience creating models and drawings in CAD for mechanical assemblies, with SolidWorks strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to manage large assemblies in CAD, including up to approximately 100 custom parts combined with 800 or more off‑the‑shelf components.
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, complex assembly creation, and detailed drawing generation.
- Experience designing sheet metal enclosures and sheet metal components.
- Working knowledge of product lifecycle management (PLM) software.
- Working knowledge of material requirements planning (MRP) software; experience with Oracle Cloud is a plus.
- Knowledge and experience with sheet metal hardware and plumbing components such as fittings and hoses.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize work based on an understanding of overall project requirements and organizational needs.
- Demonstrated skills in technical problem solving, system risk analysis, option identification, and recommendation of solutions.
- Daily proficiency with Microsoft Office software for communication, documentation, and analysis.
- Strong drafting skills, including blueprint reading and creation, and mechanical and wiring design capabilities.
- Experience or knowledge of refrigeration systems is a major plus.
- Experience in mechanical design, wiring design, and drafting using CAD tools.
- Comfort working with data center‑related products and infrastructure is beneficial.
- Experience supporting products across their lifecycle, from concept through development and production.
- Ability to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and update procedures within the engineering function.
This role is based in an engineering team office environment, collaborating closely with other engineers and technical staff. Work is primarily performed using SolidWorks, CAD tools, PLM and MRP systems, and Microsoft Office applications on standard office computer equipment. The environment supports data center‑related product development and is focused on growth and innovation, offering opportunities to work on complex mechanical and electrical designs. Travel is limited, typically less than 5% per year, with occasional domestic and international trips possible to support projects or production activities. Typical office attire is appropriate for this professional engineering setting
This is a Permanent position based out of Woburn, MA.
The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $100000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job‑related factors.
