Qualifications

Job Title: Mechanical Designer / 3D CAD Technician

Job Description

The Mechanical Designer / 3D CAD Technician produces and maintains accurate 3D models, 2D drawings, and bill of materials (BOM) documentation for mechanical designs in a manufacturing environment. Working from direction, sketches, and markups provided by senior engineering staff, this role applies sound design judgment to identify potential design, manufacturability, or drafting improvements and brings them forward for engineering review. The position requires solid working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) standards and adherence to established CAD and drafting conventions.

Responsibilities

• Create and revise 3D models and 2D detail and assembly drawings using the company CAD platform (Autodesk Inventor) based on engineering direction, sketches, and markups.
• Apply GD&T principles correctly when dimensioning and tolerancing parts and assemblies in accordance with relevant standards.
• Maintain accurate BOM structures and part numbers for assigned drawings, following established part-numbering and drawing standards.
• Check drawings for completeness, consistency, dimensional accuracy, and adherence to company drafting standards before submitting for engineering review.
• Identify potential design, manufacturability, or drafting improvements encountered during modeling and drafting work and present them to engineering staff for review rather than implementing changes independently.
• Incorporate redlines and review comments from engineering into drawings and models, tracking revisions accurately and maintaining clear revision histories.
• Translate vendor-supplied 3D models and 2D drawing packages into company drawing formats where applicable, ensuring compatibility with internal standards.
• Maintain organized drawing files, models, and revision records within the company’s document management and ERP systems.
• Provide basic drafting support for Production, Materials, and Field Services teams as directed, ensuring timely and accurate documentation.
• Collaborate closely with engineers and other stakeholders to support mechanical design, manufacturability, and documentation needs.

Essential Skills

• At least 2 years of experience producing 3D models and 2D production drawings in a manufacturing environment.
• Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD software, with strong capability in Autodesk Inventor; SolidWorks experience is acceptable.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of GD&T principles and application in accordance with relevant standards.
• Strong familiarity with drawing standards and drafting conventions used in mechanical design and manufacturing.
• Basic understanding of BOM structures and part-numbering schemes in a production environment.
• Attention to dimensional accuracy, drawing completeness, and consistency with established drafting standards.
• Ability to interpret engineering sketches, markups, and direction and translate them into clear, accurate models and drawings.
• Capability to identify potential design and manufacturability issues during the drafting process and communicate them effectively to engineering staff.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Associate degree or certificate in Mechanical Design, Drafting Technology, or a closely related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
• Experience with Autodesk Inventor in a production or manufacturing setting.
• Experience with SolidWorks and AutoCAD for mechanical design and drafting.
• Exposure to ERP systems and document management tools for maintaining BOMs, part numbers, and revision records.
• Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, production, materials, and field services teams.
• Strong organizational skills for managing drawing files, models, and revision histories.
• Willingness to follow established processes and standards while proactively suggesting improvements.

Work Environment

This role operates in a manufacturing-oriented engineering environment that relies heavily on 2D and 3D CAD tools such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD. Work is primarily performed at a workstation using CAD and ERP systems, with regular collaboration with engineering, production, materials, and field services teams to support mechanical design and documentation needs. The environment emphasizes accuracy, adherence to drafting and GD&T standards, organized document control, and effective communication across departments.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $55000.00 - $75000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
