Job summary

TEKsystems in Montgomery, AL is seeking a Communications Technician I to support installation, documentation, and troubleshooting of structured cabling for commercial projects. This entry-level role offers hands-on learning with experienced technicians.

Daily tasks include installing Cat5e/Cat6, fiber, pulling cable, terminating devices, and maintaining project records. Onsite role requires safety compliance and collaborative teamwork on site.

Qualifications

  • 0–1 year of structured cabling or low-voltage installation experience.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Willingness to learn and follow directions on commercial sites.

Responsibilities

  • Install and route Cat5e, Cat6, fiber optic, and other low-voltage cabling.
  • Install work area outlets, surface-mounted boxes, and wall outlets.
  • Pull cable through ceilings, walls, conduits, sleeves, and pathways.
  • Secure cable using J-hooks, cable tray, D-rings, and trapeze supports.
  • Label and prepare cables for termination.
  • Assist with installation of telecommunications rooms and racks.
  • Terminate low-voltage devices and connectivity hardware.
  • Maintain project documentation and time reporting.
  • Follow safety and site-specific procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to complete projects.

Job description

We are seeking motivated, dependable individuals who want to build hands‑on experience installing and supporting network infrastructure in commercial environments. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with little to no industry experience who is eager to learn from experienced technicians and grow within a skilled technical team.

What You’ll Do

As a Communications Technician I, you will assist with the installation, support, and documentation of structured cabling systems for commercial projects. Daily responsibilities may include:

  • Installing and routing Cat5e, Cat6, fiber optic, and other low‑voltage cabling
  • Installing work area outlets, surface‑mounted boxes, and wall outlets
  • Pulling cable through ceilings, walls, conduits, sleeves, and other pathways
  • Supporting and securing cable using J‑hooks, cable tray, D‑rings, trapeze supports, and other industry‑standard methods
  • Organizing, labeling, dressing, and preparing cables for termination
  • Assisting with the installation of telecommunications rooms, IDF/MDF closets, racks, patch panels, fiber hardware, and related equipment
  • Terminating low‑voltage devices and connectivity hardware
  • Performing fire‑stopping and pathway penetration work in accordance with project requirements
  • Maintaining accurate project documentation, time reporting, and material tracking
  • Following all safety, quality, and site‑specific procedures
  • Working collaboratively with team members and supervisors to complete projects successfully
Required Qualifications
  • 0 to 1 year of experience in structured cabling, low‑voltage installation, construction, or a related field
  • Ability to use basic hand tools safely and effectively
  • Strong work ethic with a willingness to learn and follow direction
  • Ability to work in commercial construction and renovation environments
  • Dependable attendance and commitment to safety standards
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials as needed on job sites
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Cat5e, Cat6, fiber optic, or low‑voltage cabling systems
  • Previous experience pulling cable or assisting with network infrastructure installations
  • Exposure to telecommunications rooms, data centers, or commercial construction projects
  • Experience with cable testing, labeling, or quality assurance practices
Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Montgomery, AL.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $26.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job‑related factors.
