Job summary

The Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) in Delaware is seeking a Groundskeeper I to perform routine grounds maintenance at the Herman Holloway Campus and State Service Centers. Responsibilities include mowing, planting, pruning, snow/ice removal, and general upkeep of outdoor spaces.

Applicants must understand operating groundskeeping equipment, safety practices, and basic property maintenance. This casual/seasonal role may require collaboration with a maintenance team and support

• Knowledge of operating groundskeeping or landscaping equipment such as mowers, tractors, sprayers, pruners, edgers, grass shears and trimmers.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine maintenance of lawn, flowers, shrubs, and trees involving planting, fertilizing, transplanting, irrigating, weeding, mulching, pruning, mowing, edging, and trimming.
• Applies pesticides and herbicides safely and responsibly when needed in accordance with all relevant health and safety regulations and standards.
• Performs seasonal care such as planting in the spring or leaf removal in the fall.
• Maintains driveways, steps, and walkways by removing snow or ice, trash and debris, and may assist in grading and repair.
• Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and hand tools including mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, blowers, edgers, grass shears, and trimmers.
• Collaborates with maintenance team members on larger projects.
• Assists in the preparation and cleanup for outdoor events.
• May perform minor repairs on outdoor structures such as fences, gates, and walkways and assist trades personnel in painting and other minor repairs as required.

Summary Statement

The incumbent in this position provides grounds keeping services and routine maintenance work on the Herman Holloway Campus and for the State Service Centers in the Northern Region. This includes snow removal.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Groundskeeper I

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Knowledge of operating groundskeeping or landscaping equipment such as mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, pruners, edgers, grass shears and trimmers.

Additional Posting Information

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
