Job description

Thuma is seeking a commercially minded Buyer with exceptional taste and strong analytical instincts to help shape our expanding assortment. You will own assortment strategy and business performance for your assigned product areas, translating customer insights, market opportunities, and Thuma’s design point of view into compelling products and profitable growth.

Working closely with Merchandising leadership, Design, Product Development, Sourcing, and Inventory Planning, you will bring a clear merchant perspective from initial concept through launch and ongoing performance. The right person balances creative judgment with financial discipline and moves comfortably between strategy and hands on execution.

Thuma’s Headquarters is based in the historic Presidio neighborhood of San Francisco. This is a hybrid role that will be in office 3 - 5 days a week.

Assortment Strategy and Product Direction
  • Develop assortment plans for assigned product areas, identifying opportunities for newness, expansion, refinement, and discontinuation.
  • Use customer feedback, competitive research, and business performance to recommend clear product priorities that support Thuma’s roadmap and create Oasis.
  • Define commercial product briefs, including customer needs, assortment positioning, target retail prices, and margin goals; partner with Design, Product Development, and Sourcing to bring them to life.
Business Performance and Inventory Partnership
  • Own the commercial performance of assigned product areas against agreed sales and margin goals; review results regularly and recommend specific actions.
  • Partner with Inventory Planning on forecasts, open to buy, initial buys, replenishment, and product exits, balancing availability with inventory productivity.
  • Recommend pricing and lifecycle decisions using product costs, competitive positioning, customer value, and financial performance.
Product Development and Launch Execution
  • Represent the merchant perspective in product and sample reviews, balancing design, quality, customer needs, and unit economics.
  • Maintain clear assortment priorities and commercial decisions in partnership with Product Development and Sourcing; surface risks and tradeoffs early.
  • Own merchandising readiness for launches, including assortment details, pricing, product information, and selling stories; align timing with inventory availability and channel readiness.
Product Storytelling and Presentation
  • Partner with Brand, Creative, Digital, Retail, and Visual Merchandising to translate product intent into clear, compelling customer experiences.
  • Ensure product information, imagery, copy, and presentation accurately communicate design, materials, function, quality, and value.
  • Use feedback from stores and Customer Experience to improve assortments, product information, and future development.
  • 5 or more years of buying or merchandising experience, preferably within home or a design led consumer business, with a record of growing sales and profitability.
  • An excellent eye for design, materials, quality, and proportion, with the judgment to distinguish lasting opportunities from short term trends.
  • Strong command of assortment planning, pricing, margin, forecasting, open to buy, and inventory productivity.
  • Experience partnering with Design, Product Development, and Sourcing to take products from concept to launch.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency with spreadsheets and business reporting tools; ability to turn data into clear recommendations.
  • Clear communication, disciplined organization, and the ability to build alignment across teams.
  • An accountable, collaborative approach, with the confidence to bring a point of view and the flexibility to adjust as new information emerges.
Performance Outcomes
  • Assigned product areas deliver agreed sales and margin goals.
  • Assortment decisions strengthen Thuma’s design point of view and respond to meaningful customer needs.
  • Forecasts and buying decisions improve availability and inventory productivity in partnership with Planning.
  • Product launches are commercially prepared and executed with accurate information and clear storytelling.
  • Performance insights translate into timely, measurable improvements.
Benefits
  • 401(k): Participation in our 401(k) program with company matching up to 6% of your contributions.
  • Benefits*: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with generous employer contributions, 100% paid parental leave, and company-sponsored One Medical and WellHub memberships.
  • Equity: Participation in employee stock option plan.
  • Flexible by Design: We operate with a high-performance mindset, paired with thoughtful flexibility—flexible hours, flexible PTO, and a hybrid approach that supports both focus and balance.
  • Time to Recharge: Enjoy 13 company holidays each year to rest, reset, and celebrate what matters most.
  • Employee Discount**: 40% off almost all Thuma products.
  • Cell Phone Stipend: $100 per month to support work-related phone use.
  • Commute Reimbursement: Up to $150 per month for commuting to our office.
  • Room Upgrade: A complimentary product credit upon joining, valued at up to $3,000.

** Some exclusions may apply

* Eligibility for compensation, benefits, and perks may vary based on employment status (e.g., full-time, part-time, temporary), work schedule, and applicable holiday policies, and are subject to the terms of the relevant plans and company guidelines.
