Job description

The Business Intelligence Analyst (BIA) serves as the expert for clinical informatics, Electronic Health Record (EPIC) reporting, and data visualization tools. The BIA has deep knowledge of EHR applications and works directly with reporting and data analytics customers to understand, design, and document complex reporting and analytics needs. The role coordinates all issues arising during reporting and data analytics projects, analyzes problems unique to UCSF Health and Benioff Children’s Hospitals, and addresses complex problems with organization‑wide scope. The BIA performs data analysis using independent judgment and technical expertise, supporting patient care, operational performance, quality, and improvement efforts. They focus on EHR reporting, data analysis, and visualization across multiple data systems (EPIC reporting tools, SQL, Tableau, etc.) and collaborate with clinical systems application teams to manage data analysis, evaluation, stakeholder feedback, and performance support for hospitals, clinics, staff, programs, and operations.

Department Description

Enterprise Information and Analytics (EIA) advances UCSF’s institutional priorities by enhancing access to and the use of data and analytics, including appropriate data platforms and governance, tailored to the unique needs of education, research, and care mission areas.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with business, technical, and clinical leaders at Benioff Children’s Hospitals and UCSF Health to plan, develop, implement, and analyze highly complex clinical informatics systems.
• Serve as an EHR application and analytics technical leader, translating operational workflow and patient experience objectives into technical requirements and maintaining strong working relationships with customers and teams.
• Develop high‑quality data and analytics solutions within all EHR reporting tools (reporting workbench, radar, slicerdicer, crystal reports) to provide sophisticated metrics and analytics that support management decision‑making, ensuring solutions are cost‑effective, scalable, and meet current and future needs.
• Design and execute SQL queries for enhanced and complex medical data access, perform quality assurance testing, and document design, deployment processes, workflows, and results.
• Provide advanced support, troubleshooting, and problem solving, assessing downstream data impacts of workflow changes, and delivering user training curricula as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in health care information technology, computer science, or a related field, and/or equivalent combination of experience and training.
• 5–7 years of related experience.
• Expertise on EHR application(s) and a good working knowledge of how the application(s) collect and store data.
• Expertise on Epic Clarity and Caboodle data structures, with the ability to independently analyze new data models to support analytic and data needs of customers.
• High proficiency with EHR reporting tools, SQL, and business intelligence tools such as SAP Universe, Web Intelligence, and Crystal Reports; ability to perform complex data analysis with large volumes of data.
• Prior experience developing self‑service analytic tools using slicerdicer, Tableau Desktop, and/or Tableau Server.
• Advanced organizational and project management skills, with the ability to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.
• Advanced interpersonal communications skills to convey highly technical information and instructions to all levels of clinical users in a clear and concise manner, provide technical support, and develop and deliver training materials as needed.
• Advanced problem‑resolution skills for highly complex issues, quickly diagnosing problems and implementing effective solutions in a timely manner.
• Advanced analytical skills and expertise in documentation and reporting, applying metrics, designing and running queries, collecting and analyzing performance data, and producing sophisticated reports and analyses for management use.
• Advanced ability to serve as a technical leader and information resource, collaborating with senior staff and management across departments to advise on policy, functionality, system efficiency, upgrades, business analytics, and industry trends.

Required Certification

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree or doctorate in computer science or a related area.
• In‑depth understanding of both clinical and business workflows to achieve strategic outcomes for implementation efforts.
• Certifications: Epic Cogito Fundamentals, Access / Clinical / Revenue Data Model.
