Job summary

UCSF Health is seeking a skilled Business Intelligence Analyst to design, implement, and optimize clinical informatics reporting and analytics across Epic systems. You will work with users to understand needs, translate them into technical specs, and deliver robust dashboards and reports that drive operational and clinical improvements.

The role focuses on EHR data access and visualization using Epic reporting tools, SQL, Tableau, and related BI technologies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • 5–7 years of related experience.
  • Epic Clarity Data Model Fundamentals certification.
  • Experience leading or mentoring developers.
  • Expertise with EHR applications and data storage concepts.
  • Strong knowledge of Epic Clarity and Caboodle data structures and analyzing new data models.
  • Proficiency with EHR reporting tools, SQL, and BI tools like SAP Universe, Web Intelligence, and Crystal Reports.
  • Experience developing self‑service analytics using slicerdicer, Tableau Desktop, and/or Tableau Server.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills; can lead teams and manage timelines.
  • Strong communication skills to translate technical concepts to non‑technical users.

Job Description

The Business Intelligence Analyst (BIA) functions as the expert for clinical informatics, Electronic Health Record (EPIC) reports, and data visualization tools. The BIA has expert knowledge on EHR applications and works with reporting and data analytics customers to understand, design, and document complex reporting and analytics needs, coordinating all issues that arise during assignments and projects. The BIA analyzes complex data challenges without precedent, addressing organization‑wide problems, and performs data analysis using independent judgment and technical expertise to support outstanding patient care, operational performance, quality, and improvement efforts. The focus is on EHR reporting, data analysis, and visualization for UCSF Health, Benioff Children’s Hospitals, and affiliates, using tools such as Epic reporting tools, SQL, Tableau, and more.

Attention to detail and strong communication are critical skills for this position. The BIA helps other users learn and adopt development standards, enhances data visualization and reporting skills, and may develop user training aids and train end users in report usage.

Department Description

Enterprise Information and Analytics (EIA) advances UCSF’s institutional priorities by enhancing access to and the use of data and analytics, including appropriate data platforms and governance, to meet the unique needs across the education, research, and care mission areas.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Benioff Children’s Hospitals and UCSF Health business, technical, and clinical leaders to plan, develop, implement, and analyze highly complex clinical informatics systems, designing integrated architecture for optimal user experience and system reliability.
  • Serve as an EHR application and analytics technical leader, translating operations workflow and patient experience objectives into technical requirements and maintaining strong relationships with customers and teams.
  • Develop high‑quality data and analytics solutions within all EHR reporting tools, including reporting workbench, radar, slicerdicer, and crystal reports, to improve clinical informatics outcomes and provide sophisticated metrics and analytics that support management decision‑making.
  • Design and run SQL queries for enhanced, complex medical data access; perform rigorous quality assurance testing; plan, develop, and document design and deployment processes, workflows, and results.
  • As a technical leader and information resource, assess downstream data impacts of workflow changes, provide advanced support, troubleshooting, and problem solving, and may develop and deliver user training curricula.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in health care information technology, computer science, or a related area, and/or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • 5–7 years of related experience.
  • Certification: Epic Clarity Data Model Fundamentals.
  • May be responsible for leading or mentoring other developers within the team.
  • Expertise on EHR application(s) and a solid working knowledge of how application(s) collect and store data.
  • Expertise on Epic Clarity and Caboodle data structures, with the ability to independently analyze new data models to support analytic and data needs.
  • High proficiency with EHR reporting tools, SQL, and business intelligence tools such as SAP Universe, Web Intelligence, and Crystal Reports; ability to perform complex data analysis with large volumes of data.
  • Prior experience developing self‑service analytic tools using slicerdicer, Tableau Desktop, and/or Tableau Server.
  • Advanced organizational and project management skills, able to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills to convey technical information to clinical users and develop training materials.
  • Strong problem‑resolution skills to diagnose and provide effective solutions for complex issues in a timely manner.
  • Advanced analytical skills, able to design and run queries, collect and analyze performance data, and produce sophisticated reports for management use.
  • Ability to serve as a technical leader and information resource, collaborating with senior staff and management across departments on policy, functionality, system efficiency, upgrades, business analytics, and industry trends.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or doctorate in computer science or a related area.
  • In‑depth understanding of clinical and business workflows to achieve strategic outcomes for implementations.
  • Certifications: Epic Cogito Fundamentals; Access / Clinical / Revenue Data Model.
