Job description

Kombo (YC '22) built a unified API for HR, payroll, LMS, and recruiting systems, and they need a Business Development Representative (NYC) to help drive their next phase of growth. Based at 171 Madison Ave in New York, NY, this on-site, full-time role puts you at the starting point of Kombo's revenue engine, generating demand from a curated list of high-value accounts the company knows it can serve well.

Why Join Kombo as a BDR in New York?

As a Business Development Representative, you'll be where most of Kombo's new pipeline starts. ARR is the top metric company-wide, and a strong BDR can be directly responsible for up to 20% of new revenue in a given quarter. You'll work in close-knit pods alongside Account Executives (AEs), thinking strategically about how to prioritize and win top accounts—and even collaborate directly with the founders to break into complex, high-value opportunities.

There's no micro-management here. The team expects everyone to own their role, including the people supporting you so you can hit your targets. Pair that with the speed of learning and ownership Kombo expects, and you'll grow fast: AE in roughly 12 months is the most common next step, with paths into management, operations, expansion, and support opening up as the team scales.

What You'll Do

At any given time, only about 5% of your ideal customer profile (ICP) is actively in-market for the product. Your job is to figure out how to reach that 5% effectively. The role is thoughtful and focused—not automated or mindless.

  • Go deep: Understand the product, the customers, and how they buy, then form your own point of view on how to meet them where they are.
  • Stay current: Keep up with what's working in outbound and lean on the company's advisors and partners.
  • Mentor as you grow: As the team expands, help onboard new BDRs and share what's working on accounts, messaging, and outbound strategy.
What Kombo Is Looking For

A few traits the team tends to see in BDRs who thrive here:

  • Curiosity and humility: You ask the right questions to truly understand a customer before adjusting your angle.
  • Clear communication: You express yourself effectively in writing and on calls.
  • Ownership: You take responsibility for your work and approach problems with structured, independent thinking.
  • Bias toward action: You prefer to ship, learn, and iterate rather than wait for a perfect plan.
  • Ambition: You want the fastest track to AE and thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • In-person energy: You enjoy collaborating face-to-face with a team in the NYC office.
What Kombo Offers
  • Competitive base plus variable compensation ($80–100k OTE) and equity.
  • Generous ESOP package.
  • Bi-annual team offsites and monthly company events.
  • Direct access to senior mentors and industry advisors.

Kombo has raised $30M+ from Y Combinator, Volition Capital, Acadian Ventures, 468 Capital, and others. The team has grown from 0 to $XXM ARR with hundreds of customers—top ~5% of VC-backed startups by growth rate—and now includes 80+ members across NYC and Berlin representing 20+ nationalities. Customers include Indeed, Greenhouse, JobGet, Recruitics, Thatch, Experian, Juicebox, HeyJobs, Spendesk, and Gem. With plans to triple both team and revenue this year, there's real room for your career growth.

Interview Process
  • 25-minute intro call
  • 45-minute deep-dive on your background and the role with Taylor, Kombo's Business Development Lead
  • 1.5-hour case study
  • Lunch with the team you'd be working with
Application Tips for Aspiring BDRs

To stand out during the interview process, consider these targeted strategies:

  • Master outbound fundamentals: Familiarize yourself with modern outbound sales tools. Understanding how to track engagement and sequence communications will give you a massive edge during the case study.
  • Study the API integration landscape: Since Kombo operates in the unified API space, having a basic grasp of how APIs connect HR and payroll systems will show you can speak the language of your prospects. Read up on common pain points in HR data integration.
  • Showcase your research: For your case study, don't just pitch generic value. Identify a specific type of company that would benefit from Kombo's unified API and craft a tailored hypothesis on how to reach them.
  • Demonstrate concise writing: BDRs live and die by their written communication. Bring examples of cold emails or outreach sequences you've crafted—brief, personalized, and focused on the prospect's pain point.

If you're ready to own your growth and make a measurable impact, this is the role for you. Take the next step in your sales career and join a team thats building something transformative.
