Job description

We are partnered with a well-established aerospace and defense manufacturer that is investing in the continued expansion of its commercial and business development capability.

The business designs and manufactures highly engineered aerospace components and systems supporting commercial and military platforms, with established relationships across aircraft OEMs, prime contractors, Tier 1 suppliers and aftermarket customers.

The organisation is now looking to appoint a Business Development Manager who will take ownership of identifying, developing and converting new business opportunities across both OEM and aftermarket markets.

This is an individual contributor position with significant visibility across the organisation and a strong focus on genuine new business development, customer engagement and long-term commercial growth.

The successful individual will manage opportunities throughout the full business development cycle, from early customer engagement and specification development through RFQ, proposal, negotiation and ultimately securing new business awards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and develop new business opportunities across commercial and military aerospace markets
  • Lead the pursuit and capture of new OEM and aftermarket business
  • Develop relationships with existing customers while opening opportunities with new accounts
  • Engage customers early within the procurement and product development cycle
  • Work with customers to understand technical requirements and support specification development
  • Develop relationships across aircraft OEMs, prime contractors, Tier 1 suppliers, airlines, MROs and other aerospace organisations
  • Secure and manage Requests for Proposal, Requests for Quote and Requests for Information
  • Develop and support business cases and go/no-go decisions for new opportunities
  • Work closely with internal commercial and technical teams to develop competitive proposals
  • Participate in commercial negotiations and relevant terms of sale
  • Own and manage the new business pipeline and opportunity funnel
  • Drive opportunities from initial identification through to contract award
  • Conduct market, competitor, platform and product analysis to identify areas for growth
  • Contribute to sales forecasting, long-term business planning and commercial strategy
  • Represent the organisation at customer meetings, trade shows, conferences and industry events
  • Work closely with Business Unit Managers, Engineering, Operations and Customer Service teams to support customer requirements
Ideal Background
  • Business development, technical sales or commercial experience within aerospace, defense or another highly engineered manufacturing environment
  • Proven experience developing and winning new business
  • Experience selling technical, engineered or manufactured products
  • Aerospace components experience would be highly advantageous but is not essential
  • Existing exposure to aircraft OEMs, prime contractors, Tier 1 suppliers, airlines or MRO organisations would be beneficial
  • Experience working with major aircraft manufacturers or leading defense primes would be advantageous
  • Experience within automotive, industrial equipment or other technically demanding manufacturing sectors may also be considered
  • Strong understanding of complex B2B sales cycles and technical procurement processes
  • Ability to engage effectively with Engineering, Procurement, Supply Chain and senior commercial stakeholders
  • Strong commercial judgment and negotiation capability
  • Ability to understand technical customer requirements and translate them into commercial opportunities
  • Experience managing a sales pipeline and driving opportunities through a structured funnel
  • Highly self-motivated and comfortable operating independently
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking capability
  • High level of energy, accountability and urgency
  • Willingness to travel extensively to customers across the United States and internationally where required

Aerospace experience is preferred but not considered an absolute requirement, and direct experience with the organisation's specific hydraulic, fluid or electromechanical products is not necessary.

Why Consider This Opportunity?
  • Join an established aerospace and defense manufacturer with significant existing customer relationships
  • Take ownership of a strategically important business development position
  • Genuine opportunity to focus on opening new customers and winning new programmes
  • Exposure to major aerospace OEMs, defense primes and Tier 1 organisations
  • Work across both commercial and military aerospace markets
  • Operate across both OEM and aftermarket business opportunities
  • Significant interaction with senior commercial and business unit leadership
  • Opportunity to influence the organisation's wider growth strategy
  • Highly autonomous individual contributor position
  • Join a performance-driven organisation where strong performers can progress rapidly
  • Opportunity to develop toward increasingly senior commercial and operational leadership positions
  • Relocation assistance available for the right individual

The position is based on-site in Northeast Ohio when not travelling. Candidates should be comfortable with extensive customer travel, potentially reaching approximately 70% depending on business requirements.

This opportunity would suit a commercially driven business development professional who enjoys opening new accounts, developing technical customer relationships and taking ownership of opportunities from initial engagement through to contract award within a high-performance aerospace manufacturing environment.
