Job summary

The Cincinnati Insurance Companies in Tennessee and Alabama is seeking an experienced construction underwriter to actively manage a multi-state book of new and renewal business, with premiums above $250,000 for new business and $500,000 for renewals.

You'll partner with agents, work toward growth and profitability targets, and mentor junior underwriters while occasionally traveling to support key accounts and assess risk across the territory.

Qualifications

  • 5 years of construction underwriting experience in middle market and large accounts.
  • Knowledge of loss-sensitive programs, collateral concepts, wrap-ups and other contractor coverage.
  • Analytical and critical-thinking skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel roughly 25% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a territory of guaranteed cost and loss sensitive business above $250,000 in new business and $500,000 in renewals.
  • Responsible for both new business production goals and a renewal book of larger Key Accounts.
  • Engage with agents/brokers to drive revenue with Key Account size business.
  • Collaborate with local field marketing reps to drive submission activity.
  • Evaluate renewals to achieve rate/retention dynamics and policy terms.
  • Proactively engage insureds with stewardship service plans including claims and loss control.
  • Mentor less experienced underwriters.

Our Commercial Lines Key Accounts department is currently seeking an experienced underwriter to actively engage with agents and brokers to manage a book of new and renewal business in the assigned multi-state territory. Key Accounts are defined as those risks generating premiums in excess of $250,000 package premium annually.

This position is for our Tennessee and Alabama, territories. Positions serving territories away from our Headquarters in Fairfield, Ohio may be fully remote.

The pay range for this position is $100,000 - $195,000 annually. The pay determination is based on the applicant’s education, experience, location, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Eligible associates may also receive an annual cash bonus and stock incentives based on company and individual performance.

Be ready to:
  • manage a territory of guaranteed cost and loss sensitive business as a life-cycle underwriter above $250,000 in New Business and $500,000 for renewals
  • responsible for both new business production goals and a renewal book of business of our larger Key Accounts
  • engage with partner agents and brokers that drive revenue with Key Account size business by promoting our company’s products and services
  • work to strategically grow by partnering with our local field marketing reps to drive submission activity
  • understand the agency planning process and impact of contingency/supplemental commission arrangements
  • speak competently about relevant issues impacting contractors and how it impacts their risk management program
  • evaluate and document contractor exposures and controls, analyzing actuarial loss models using both predictive analytics and a layered and excess loss approach
  • price business to achieve positive returns within the framework of the organization’s risk appetite
  • effectively negotiate renewals to achieve business unit goals, including rate/retention dynamics and policy terms and conditions
  • proactively engage insureds in the assigned territory, developing and executing on stewardship service plans - addressing claims, loss control and RMIS service needs
  • collaborate with, and mentor less experienced underwriters
Qualifications - External
Be equipped with:
  • 5 years of construction specific underwriting experience in middle market and large accounts preferred
  • working knowledge of large account marketing and underwriting, including awareness of loss sensitive programs, familiarity with collateral concepts, wrap-ups and other contractor specific coverage
  • analytical and critical-thinking skills
  • strong understanding of the life cycle on construction projects
  • excellent oral and written communication skills
  • strong negotiation and relationship-building abilities
  • understanding of portfolio management and ability to balance growth and profit dynamics to achieve company targets
  • self-starter with creative thinking and an ability to create opportunity
  • willingness to travel roughly 25% of the time. Includes day trips and occasional overnight
