Opens new wholesale business for MSP and sets the sales strategy the whole team follows. The Business Development Director finds, wins and onboards new accounts ‒ regional retailers, restaurant groups, institutions and distributors ‑ then hands them to the Wholesale Account Manager, and coaches that role so the company keeps what it wins. This is the "hunter" role.
Key responsibilities
New business
- Build and work a target list of accounts that fit MSP's product, volume and margin profile.
- Prospect, visit, present, run tastings and close; negotiate pricing, volumes and terms within the margin guardrails agreed with the General Manager.
- Onboard each new account (specifications, credit application, first orders), then hand it to the Wholesale Account Manager once it orders regularly.
Sales strategy and planning
- Prepare the annual sales plan with the General Manager: target segments, volume and gross margin by channel, pricing strategy.
- Match the sales plan to plant capacity and carcass balance, so that selling the whole animal — not just the middle meats — is part of every plan.
- Track market conditions (cattle prices, competitor offers, customer trends) and recommend price moves.
Coaching the sales team
- Coach the Wholesale Account Manager on account planning, upselling and negotiation; run a joint weekly pipeline and account review.
- Keep sales tools current: price lists, product specifications, cut sheets, presentations.
Representation
- Represent MSP at trade shows, industry and farm-to-table events; build relationships with chefs, buyers and distributors.
- Work with Retail & Social Media so the brand story is consistent across wholesale and retail.
Information
- Keep the pipeline, visits and forecasts in the CRM; report monthly to the General Manager against plan.
Qualifications
Required
- 7+ years in B2B sales in fresh meat, protein or foodservice, with a proven record of opening new accounts
- Deep knowledge of beef cuts, carcass utilization and how customers buy

- Proficient with a CRM and Google Workspace or Microsoft Office; valid driver's licence and clean driving record
Preferred
- Existing relationships with New England retailers, restaurant groups or distributors
- Experience selling for a USDA-inspected regional packer or a local/regional beef brand
- Post-secondary education in business, marketing, culinary arts or agriculture
Working conditions
- Regular regional travel; some early mornings, evenings and events
