Business Development/Capital Project Manager

Join Marmon Rail as a Business Development/Capital Project Manager, driving end-to-end project management and strategic business development within the global rail organization backed by Berkshire Hathaway.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Engage customers and potential customers for ongoing strategic business development and growth.
  • Effectively manage relationships between customers, corporate leadership, and frontline operations for successful project outcomes.
  • Analyze requests for proposals to develop professional responses for construction projects.
  • Ensure a safe working environment through guidance and collaboration with safety professionals.
  • Ensure financial performance of projects align to stated goals utilizing evaluation forms, customer reports, PO requests, safety audits, month-end reporting, progress billing, and end-of-project billing.
  • Identify deficiencies in track infrastructure and prepare proposals and pricing for correcting deficiencies for customers.
  • Manage projects through constant communication with operation leaders, ensuring all conditions of proposals are met.
  • Manage inventory and vendor orders to jobs, ensuring all materials are on site in a timely manner.
  • Motivate and maintain a high level of morale among employees.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of operating procedures, safety rules, and rail construction operations.
  • Ensure that payroll, fuel costs, equipment costs, and other costs are managed effectively. Properly maintain the purchase order system.
  • Coordinate with operations adequate resources and work schedules so that each crew has a balanced mix of experience with appropriate expertise in all job types.

Education & Experience

  • College degree in Engineering, Building and Construction Technology or equivalent construction management experience required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write professional proposals, routine reports, and customer correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Math / Computer skills: AutoCAD preferred. Ability to work with all units of measure such as computing ratios, percents, and interpreting bar graphs.
  • Microsoft Excel and Word fully functional.
  • Experience with standard problems that occur in a construction environment.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to walk extensively, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance or stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Must be able to talk and hear.
  • Must occasionally lift and or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires extensive time in various weather conditions.

Benefits & Compensation

Pay range: $89,000 - $107,000.
