The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides human connection, housing, and health care to individuals struggling with housing stability or poverty. Our work is centered around two core service areas:Outreach & Healthcare andYouth Housing. Through our Outreach & Health programs, we meet people where they are, on CTA platforms, in encampments, at libraries, and across city neighborhoods; offering consistent, compassionate care and vital health services.
Our Youth Housing programs provide shelter and supportive services to young adults, helping them build stability and work toward their goals in safe, affirming environments. As a Bus Outreach Professional, you'll provide a steady and supportive presence aboard the Health Outreach Bus while engaging with guests compassionately and without judgment. You'll work closely with team members, volunteers, and healthcare staff to ensure that visitors receive the respect, care, and connections they need.
Offering a warm, welcoming presence for visitors and providing referrals to housing, health, and social services.
Building relationships with clients through trauma-informed, harm reduction-oriented support.
Assisting with data entry into systems such as Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Efforts to Outcomes (ETO).
Performing basic pre-maintenance checks and assisting with vehicle upkeep.
Supporting The Night Ministry's health services team with HIV/STI testing and counseling coordination.
Participating in community needs assessments and staying current on issues facing the populations we serve.
Attending staff meetings and trainings when possible, and occasionally representing the agency publicly.
Collaborating with volunteers and helping cultivate opportunities for engagement and learning.
This is a part-time role. Team members typically work three shifts per week, scheduled Sunday through Tuesday, with some flexibility to swap days as needed.
We're looking for someone with a heart for outreach and the skills to provide compassionate, informed support to people navigating extreme challenges. You should be dependable, adaptable, and comfortable working directly with the public in fast-moving environments.
1-3 years of outreach experience with individuals experiencing homelessness, or similar lived/work experience.
Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required.
Valid driver's license and insurability.
Able to be on your feet outdoors for up to six consecutive hours in varying weather.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Familiarity with harm reduction practices and comfort working with diverse populations.
Speak Spanish
Currently hold or are open to obtaining a CDL Class B license
