Job summary

Southeast Area Transit District is seeking a Bus Operator to ensure safe and efficient transit services in Norwich, Connecticut. The successful candidate will operate transit buses, assist passengers with disabilities, and manage fare collection.

This full-time position offers a starting pay of $24.02/hour and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and vacation days. Applicants should possess a valid CDL and customer service experience.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a customer service position.
  • Should be at least 21 years old with a valid CDL.
  • Must pass DOT physical exam and CDL tests.

Responsibilities

  • Operate transit buses and assist passengers.

Job description

Job Description / Responsibilities
  • Operate transit buses and wheelchair lifts/ramps.
  • Assist passengers with disabilities by providing assistance with securing wheelchairs, boarding and exiting, and guidance as needed.
  • Collect fares, verify passes and ID cards, and coordinate passenger transfers.
  • Receive and transmit communications over a two‑way radio and mobile data terminal (MDT).
  • Report schedule delays; complete and file reports including accidents, detours, vehicle inspections, fares and passes, and other incidents; make recommendations for safety and route improvements.
  • Work cooperatively at all levels of personnel.
  • Attend in‑service training, seminars or other opportunities for professional development as made available by the District.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a position requiring excellent customer service skills.
  • At least 21 years old, valid CDL (Class A or B).
  • CDL Endorsements of P and in addition either S, V, F or A (CDIP accepted).
  • No more than one (1) moving violation in last three years.
  • Ability to work all shifts (including nights, weekends, holidays and split shifts) and maximum hours per day not to exceed CT Hours of Service.
  • Must not have outside employment that interferes with employment at SEAT.
  • Ability to pass DOT physical exam and pending CDL tests, pre‑employment testing meeting the physical requirements of the position.
  • Must be able to attend training.
  • Must be able to effectively read, write and comprehend Basic English.
Compensation & Benefits

$24.02/Hour to start; Excellent Full‑Time benefits including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, vacation, sick, personal days, 457(b) and an EAP program.
