Job summary

Green Mountain Transit (GMT) is seeking a Bus Operator for Berlin, responsible for safely transporting passengers and providing excellent customer service. Description And Essential Functions

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a bus in the transport of passengers. Must exercise sound judgment in all instances including but not limited to emergencies. Routinely operates various types of buses. Receives assignments and instructions in specific written and/or oral form.

This job description excludes marginal functions that are incidental to performing the job. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Operates various buses in a safe, efficient manner.
  • Provides customer service that is helpful to the passenger, enabling them to reach their final destination. This includes answering questions, providing directions, issuing passenger transfers, and providing information about GMT transit services.
  • Arrives on time for shifts, dressed in a complete uniform.
  • Checks in with Dispatcher at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Provides physical assistance to disabled passengers when necessary.
  • Obeys all applicable traffic laws.
  • Greets passengers, monitors fare collection, and helps customers understand fare structures.
  • Follows route schedules and notifies the Dispatch office of traffic or weather issues affecting schedules.
  • Communicates verbally in English, both in person and via two-way radio.
  • Uses radio to report problems such as road conditions, detours, passenger issues, and emergencies.
  • Conducts pre-trip inspections for safety and cleanliness, reporting discrepancies.
  • Completes reports such as Pre-Trip Inspection, passenger surveys, and incident reports accurately and timely.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: A high school diploma or GED preferred. Minimum age 21. Requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements; GMT is willing to train with a CDL permit. Must pass background checks, DOT physical, and drug screening. Knowledge of transportation services and customer service skills are beneficial.

Skills and Abilities: Must possess and maintain a valid CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement, a valid DOT physical, and be able to operate GMT's fleet safely. Ability to see all directions while seated, reach controls, and perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, and lifting up to 35 pounds.
