Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision of the Transit Supervisor. This position performs full operation of buses to provide transportation to the public in a safe and efficient manner with strong customer service. Must be prepared to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES BUS OPERATOR:
Pick up, transport, and drop off passengers on a prescribed deviated fixed route, as determined by schedules and local, state, and federal laws and standards.
Perform a thorough federally mandated pre-trip bus inspection before each trip to ensure the vehicle is in proper working order. Completes post-trip inspection at the end of each shift to assess any maintenance needs.
Conducts self appropriately as a representative of Clear Creek County, uses sound judgment at all times, works safely on the job, respects co-workers, and assures the quality of services to all customers, both internal and external.
Reports all unusual occurrences, including vehicle and road conditions, to the Transit Supervisor and follows all traffic, safety, emergency, and standard rules and operating procedures.
Maintains and practices safe defensive driving techniques with constant attention to speed and the external environment.
Assist disabled passengers entering and exiting vehicles, provide ADA services to disabled passengers according to policy and procedures and federal guidelines, and communicate special safety instructions. Maintains guest relations by monitoring the comfort needs of passengers.
Provide riders with schedule/route information and trip planning assistance to reach their desired destinations effectively.
Proficiency in operating equipment concerning transit operations, including cell phone operation, computer-aided dispatch communication systems, emergency alert systems, and security cameras.
Verify that all paperwork submitted to dispatch is fully compliant – including but not limited to accident and incident reports and vehicle inspection forms (pre/post trip).
Maintain vehicle interior and exterior cleanliness to uphold company standards and provide a safe and presentable environment.
Must attend other training as requested.
Able to cover dispatch phone if needed.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Regular and reliable attendance and performance are required.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / EDUCATIONBUS OPERATOR
High School diploma or equivalent.
Valid Colorado driver's license.
At least 3 years of driving experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESBUS OPERATOR

Knowledge of transit system operating rules, regulations, and routes. Safety practices and procedures related to transit vehicle operation and public safety. Safe and efficient operation of county vehicles. Recognizing potentially hazardous situations in traffic on the roadway.
Ability to pass required drug and alcohol tests per federal and state regulations and guidelines.
Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions to operate a bus.
Ability to understand federal and state regulations, traffic laws, and County policies regarding vehicle operation.
Interpersonal skills are necessary to be courteous of citizens while transporting and performing other duties.
Ability to concentrate and pay attention to possible traffic hazards.
Incumbent is required to sit for extended periods.
Ability to accurately and effectively transmit and receive information necessary to accomplish goals and objectives, including effective written and oral communication; ability to keep customers, subordinates, peers, and supervisors informed; and the ability to listen.
Able to maintain courteous and effective working relationships with the public, County departments, co-workers, and other agencies.
Ability to assist passengers when necessary.
Frequent exposure to driving on county roads in a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to obtain and retain a thorough understanding of all new rules and procedures which are in effect.
Ability to use prudent judgment and common sense in making quick, safe decisions with minimal supervision and adapt to constantly changing operating environments.
Ability to effectively communicate with customers and coworkers courteously and professionally. This includes providing excellent customer service by sensitively attending to a diverse customer base's needs.
Ability to work and maintain professional composure while under stress and pressure.
Ability to be re-certified periodically on standard operating procedures, through examination of all rules, and as hands-on proficiency.
Ability to maintain a high-performance level of dependability, reliability, and safety.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS BUS OPERATOR:
You must be at least 21 years old and have three years of driving history. Your license must have no restrictions, and you must not have had any major violations within the last five years.
Must pass a defensive driving course within six months of hire.
Must attend other training as requested.
Must Pass a DOT physical.
Must pass a background check: Criminal
Conviction of a crime will not be an absolute bar to employment
Must pass initial and all random alcohol & drug tests.
Required legal authorization to work - United States citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
SUPERVISORY:
There are no supervisory duties related to this position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed in a field environment. The noise level experienced in this position will be moderate to occasionally excessive from time to time. Work is scheduled on all days of the week, with some time off each week, and it requires working some holidays. The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the job's essential functions successfully. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for long periods, typically while driving a vehicle. In addition, incumbents in this position will need to talk, hear, walk, and use hands-to-finger coordination to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stand, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Physical demands are described as passive (exerting up to 10 lbs. of force frequently or constantly. Occasionally lift, carry, pull, or push up to 40 lbs to move objects). Must be able to occasionally stoop, kneel, balance, reach, and crouch while performing duties. Must possess verbal and auditory capacity, enabling interpersonal communication and communication through automated devices such as a radio. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. Hearing voice conversation is essential to safe and effective job performance. Employees in this position may be exposed to various climatic conditions, such as cold, heat, wind, rain, dust, and snow.
