Job summary

Portage Public Schools is seeking a Bus Mechanic - Maintenance to perform specialized mechanical duties in the repair, inspection and routine maintenance of heavy and light automotive equipment.

You will repair diesel and gasoline powered buses, trucks and other equipment, keep maintenance records and assist in the district’s annual bus inspections. Maintain inventory and support a safe, reliable transportation program for students.

Qualifications

• High school education with coursework in skilled crafts or trades.
• Practical knowledge of heavy and light automotive mechanical equipment maintenance (4 years).
• State Certified Mechanic and ability to obtain CDL Class B with Air Brake and School Bus endorsements.

Responsibilities

• Repair, inspect and maintain diesel and gasoline powered buses, trucks, cars and other equipment.
• Prepare records pertaining to work performed and maintain inventory.
• Assist in annual school bus inspections by the State of Michigan and follow PPS policies.

Job Summary:

Perform specialized mechanical duties in the repair, inspection and routine maintenance of heavy and light automotive equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform mechanical duties in the repair, inspection and maintenance of diesel and gasoline powered buses, trucks, cars, and other power-driven equipment, with guidance and direction from upper level personnel.
• Prepare necessary records pertaining to work performed.
• Serve as a key contact for the District’s annual inspection of school buses by the State of Michigan.
• Assist in maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies and materials. Follow a predetermined preventative maintenance program on buses, trucks, cars and other power-driven equipment.
• Provide technical guidance and direction to lower level personnel. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
• Act as a back-up driver for buses operated by the District.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Manager.
• Regular and consistent attendance.
• Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Handbook.

Qualifications:

• Work requires an educational background normally acquired through a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades.
• Work requires a practical knowledge of heavy and light automotive mechanical equipment maintenance normally acquired through 4 years of automotive repair experience.
• Must be a State Certified Mechanic and have the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s license, Class B, with Air Brake and School Bus endorsements and pass a required MDOT physical.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment and any random drug testing.
• Proficient computer and document skills.
