Job summary

Mahomet-Seymour CUSD #3 Transportation Department is seeking a Bus Mechanic to keep the district's vehicles in top operating condition and ready for daily student transportation services.

The position involves diagnosing and repairing brakes, engines, electrical systems and other components, performing routine maintenance, and completing state inspections. Hours vary and overtime is required when district demands dictate.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to pass a physical abilities test.
  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain licensure to drive a school bus.
  • Ability to operate a wheelchair lift.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and service district vehicles to ensure safe operation.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and lubrication.
  • Inspect brakes, steering, wheel bearings, and safety devices.
  • Order parts and track service schedules for each vehicle.
  • Test drive trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Determine if repairs can be done in-house or outsourced.
  • Complete state vehicle inspections as required.
  • Maintain records of service schedules and repairs.

Description

Mahomet-Seymour CUSD #3 Transportation Department is currently hiring for the position of Bus Mechanic. This position is responsible for keeping the district's vehicles in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational transportation program. The work hours for this position will vary. The schedule is subject to change with district demands. Overtime is required when requested.


Responsibilities


  • Uses hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.

  • Inspects brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.

  • Performs routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.

  • Completion of the necessary State inspection of district vehicles.

  • Completes minor repairs within scope of certifications and mechanical knowledge.

  • Raises vans, trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks.

  • Test drive trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.

  • Inspects malfunctions to determine if repairs can be done in-house or need to be outsourced.

  • Examines and adjusts protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.

  • Inspects and verifies dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.

  • Repairs engines, electrical systems, brakes, etc. within scope of certification and mechanical knowledge.

  • Repairs and adjust seats, doors, and windows.

  • Orders parts and vehicles.

  • Tracks service schedule for each vehicle.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or Administration.


Qualifications


  • Must be 21 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Physically be able to bend, stoop, twist, turn, reach, carry, pull, push, and climb steps frequently and sit extensively.

  • Ability to lift up to 85 lbs.

  • Ability to push/pull up to 55 lbs.

  • Must be able to pass a physical abilities test.

  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain licensure to drive a school bus.

  • Repetitive use of arms, hands, and shoulders especially on right side to operate door opener.

  • Repetitive use of legs and feet.

  • Ability to communicate to students, parents and staff in an acceptable/courteous manner.

  • Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to operate a wheelchair lift.

  • Enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and pupils.


Salary: $25 per hour
