Job Description

Under general supervision, operate a school bus on assigned route(s) and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation. Perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections, obey traffic laws and bus regulations, maintain discipline of students, complete required reports, and secure the bus after each run. Exercise tact and courtesy in relations with parents/guardians and school personnel. Reports to a Zone Transportation Supervisor.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform required pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections and document them as required by Transportation Department Operating Instructions.
  • Report mechanical defects or failures to the Zone Transportation Supervisor, Zone Routing Specialist, on‑duty mechanic, or school bus garage control center.
  • If the assigned bus is unfit, perform inspections on substitute buses.
  • Detect students still on board after a trip and identify any vandalism or irregularities.
  • Operate the bus on the assigned route(s) and schedule.
  • Notify the supervisor of any route changes due to student additions or deletions.
  • Obey all traffic laws and bus regulations while operating the vehicle.
  • Observe safety regulations, including emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Keep a copy of the Handbook for the School Bus Driver and Safety Assistant for guidance.
  • Maintain student discipline, establish plans consistent with school disciplinary objectives, and report undisciplined students.
  • Transport only authorized students and discharge them only at authorized stops.
  • Keep the bus clean and free of hazardous items.
  • Report all accidents as required and remain at the scene until released.
  • Complete personal time cards and necessary reports.
  • Secure the bus before leaving the vehicle, including proper parking, visual inspection, and securing windows and doors.
  • Maintain positive relationships with parents/guardians and school personnel.
Minimum Training and Experience

Graduation from high school and some experience driving large vehicles with passenger transport preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with school bus certification.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Physical Requirements: Able to operate a bus, decelerate quickly, apply brakes in emergencies, turn steering rapidly, exit through emergency exits within 20 seconds, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Data Conception: Compare and judge functional characteristics of data and objects.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Speak and signal to convey information effectively.
  • Language Ability: Read and prepare written correspondence and reports; speak with poise and confidence.
  • Intelligence: Apply common sense to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Record, deliver, and explain information; communicate efficiently in standard English.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Use basic arithmetic and compute totals.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Inspect items for length, width, and shape.
  • Motor Coordination: Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly to operate the bus.
  • Manual Dexterity: Handle bus equipment, knobs, and switches with minimal coordination.
  • Color Discrimination: Recognize traffic signal colors (red, green, amber).
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Adapt to stress and interact with individuals under stress.
  • Physical Communication: Speak and hear warning sounds; distinguish whispered voice at five feet.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safe and efficient bus operation practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and school bus regulations.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and standards for school buses; general knowledge of Transportation Department Operating Instructions.
  • Ability to inspect the bus physically per Operating Instructions.
  • Ability to detect and report mechanical defects.
  • Ability to maintain student discipline and keep the bus clean.
  • Ability to complete required reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians, students, and school personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required.
