BUS DRIVER – 2 HR PM ROUTE
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision, operates a school bus on assigned route(s) and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the programs and offerings of the school system. Work involves performing pre-and post-trip inspections of the bus; operating a bus; obeying all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the bus; observing all safety regulations and standards for school buses; and maintaining discipline of students assigned to ride the bus. Employee is also responsible for completing all required reports and securing the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route. Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in maintaining acceptable relations with parents/guardians of students transported and with school personnel. Reports to a Zone Transportation Supervisor for bus driving duties.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school and some experience driving large vehicles and transporting people preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with school bus certification.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a school bus and quickly decelerate, apply brakes, turn the steering wheel rapidly, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and judge observable characteristics of data, people, or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires speaking and signaling people effectively, receiving instructions, and communicating with students and others.
Language Ability: Requires reading, preparing, and speaking in standard English with poise, voice control, and confidence.
Intelligence: Requires applying common sense to follow written or oral instructions and solve problems with several variables.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires recording, delivering, and explaining information and following instructions.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires using basic arithmetic to add and subtract totals.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires inspecting items for proper length, width, and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires coordinating hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in operating the bus.
Manual Dexterity: Requires handling various items, equipment, knobs, and switches; minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires recognizing standard traffic signal colors (red, green, amber).
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires dealing with people under stress and adapting under pressure.
Physical Communication: Requires talking and hearing at a level sufficient to distinguish warning sounds; hearing a whispered voice at five feet is adequate.
