Job summary

Duke University Transportation Services in Durham is seeking a Bus Driver to safely operate transit vehicles on assigned routes, transporting students, employees, patients, visitors with courteous professional service.

You will follow regulations, complete logs and inspections, communicate with dispatch, and participate in training; flexible scheduling including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum of one year of experience operating public transportation vehicles or similar heavy vehicles.
• Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Air Brake Endorsement.
• Ability to meet all applicable federal, state, and Duke transportation requirements.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate buses and transit vehicles on assigned routes and adhere to schedules.
• Transport students, employees, patients, visitors, and other passengers in a courteous, professional manner.
• Follow state and federal traffic laws, regulations, and Duke policies.
• Complete required documentation including manifests, inspections, and incident reports.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure safe operation.
• Communicate with dispatch using two-way radio for route updates and incidents.
• Attend training and development activities and follow dispatch instructions.

What You'll Do:

• Safely operate buses and transit vehicles on assigned routes while adhering to scheduled service times.
• Transport students, employees, patients, visitors, and other passengers in a courteous and professional manner.
• Follow all state and federal traffic laws, transit regulations, and Duke University transportation policies and procedures.
• Complete required documentation, including manifests, vehicle inspections, accident reports, and operational records.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safe and reliable vehicle operation.
• Communicate effectively with dispatch personnel using two-way radio systems regarding route updates, emergencies, incidents, and service needs.
• Assist passengers with boarding, exiting, and other transportation-related needs while ensuring a comfortable and safe ride experience.
• Maintain familiarity with assigned routes, transfer points, service areas, roadway conditions, and system safety features.
• Respond appropriately to changing traffic conditions, service interruptions, emergencies, and operational challenges.
• Attend and successfully complete required training programs and ongoing professional development activities.
• Exercise sound judgment when following dispatch instructions and managing passenger transportation needs.
• Prepare detailed reports concerning accidents, incidents, vehicle breakdowns, and mechanical concerns as required.
• Work flexible schedules, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, based on operational requirements.
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned to support Transportation Services operations.

What You'll Need:

Minimum Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience

• Minimum of one year of experience operating public transportation vehicles, heavy trucks, commercial vehicles, or similar heavy equipment.

Licenses & Certifications

• Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Air Brake Endorsement.
• Ability to meet all applicable federal, state, and Duke University transportation requirements.
