Job summary

Denver Public Schools is seeking a Transportation Driver to safely transport students to and from regularly scheduled routes, ensuring compliance with all laws and DPS policies. Roles include pre-trip inspections, adherence to dispatch orders, and maintaining safety and on-time performance.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, a Colorado driver’s license (21+), insurability, and the ability to work in a diverse environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma/GED.
• A current and valid State of Colorado driver’s license; must be 21+.
• Must meet District insurability requirements for driving a district vehicle; meet CO Dept of Education and FMCSR Part 382 requirements; pass DOT medical.
• Ability to take responsibility for one’s own performance.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment; collaborate with staff and students.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with Transportation personnel on routes and communicates with parents, community, and passengers.
• Conducts pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections; reports defects and understands basic mechanical functions.
• Adheres to radio dispatch instructions and responds to two-way radio calls.
• Obeys all traffic laws and district policies; follows handbook and local ordinances.
• Maintains assigned time schedules and may drive during pre-day and dusk periods; prioritizes safety.
• Transports students with disabilities using proper equipment and knowledge of assistive devices.
• Represents the Department professionally and works with Bus Paraprofessionals and school staff.
• Manages student behavior using approved discipline procedures to ensure safety.
• Upholds DPS dress code and maintains a professional, customer-service demeanor.
• Maintains confidentiality of student information and reports suspected child abuse per DPS guidelines.

Safely transports (e.g., picks up and drops off) students at regularly scheduled neighborhood locations, in accordance with Federal, State, local laws and regulations (e.g., Colorado Department of Education (CDE); Denver Public Schools (DPS) training, policies and procedures; and safety rules and regulations.

What You'll Do

• Collaborates, interacts with, and communicates with all Transportation personnel regarding routes updates & interacts professionally with parents, community, and passengers a customer service oriented approach Must be able to work flexible shifts in all weather conditions
• Ensures that the bus can be operated safely before driving and conducts pre-trip & post trip safety inspections as required by district, and state laws to include observing visual defects and checking operating systems to include brakes, horn, lights, and devices. Reports defect or needed repairs to Maintenance. Understand basic mechanical functions
• Adheres to directive given by radio dispatch and responds when called over two way radio
• Obeys all traffic laws and transportation practices as outlined in the, Transportation Department Handbook, School Board Policy and local ordinances
• Checks with the dispatcher daily for any changes in normal duties or new student passengers. Keeps assigned time schedules, which may require driving during pre-day light and dusk periods, and makes every effort to be on time while ensuring safety
• Transports students with disabilities operating and installing proper special needs equipment (e.g. integrated seats, Besi seat, safety vest), and maintaining current knowledge of assistive equipment use and installation
• Represents the Department and District professionally at all times with adherence to applicable dress code. Works collaboratively with Bus Paraprofessionals and school staff
• Manages passenger and student behavior using proper department procedures for student management issues to ensure safety
• Uphold DPS dress code standards and maintain a professional, customer-service-oriented demeanor at all times
• Protect the confidentiality of student information and report suspected child abuse in accordance with DPS guidelines
• Perform other duties as requested.

What You’ll Need

• Minimum High School Diploma/GED
• A current and valid State of Colorado drivers’ license Must be 21 years of age
• Must meet District insurability requirements for driving a district vehicle. Must meet Colorado Department of Education and FMCSR Part 382 requirements. Must pass Department of Transportation physical (DOT). Certification in First Aid / CPR, desired (within 90 Days)

• Ability to communicate with diverse student population.
• Ability to successfully complete all training requirements.
