Job Description - Bus Driver, Full-Time & Part-Time (2501913)

Required Qualifications:

Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Must have, keep, and maintain a valid NYS CDL Class B Driver’s License with Passenger and Air Brakes and be able to be 19A certified as required by New York State DMV; have a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations (*** Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes"). Appointment is contingent upon proof of identity, employment eligibility, and successful completion of pre-employment drug testing mandated by the Federal Highway Administration Omnibus Transportation Act of 1991. Employment begins only after notification of successful testing. Must comply with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (drug and alcohol testing).

Brief Description of Duties:

• Drive a full-size passenger bus on and off SUNY property to transport passengers and materials.
• Perform pre-trip inspections: check horn, lights, brakes, tires, and complete required forms.
• Monitor gauges, refuel as needed.
• Supervise passenger loading/unloading and handle personal property.
• Post manifests, inventories, and maintain records of transported goods and passengers, including compiling count sheets from all drivers when assigned.
• Transport passengers with disabilities.
• Operate radio and/or cellular phones for communication.
• Keep detailed records of trips, mileage, stopovers, fuel, tolls, and passenger counts; report malfunctions and repairs.
• Drive campus routes, do charters, and handle special assignments such as graduation transportation.
• Maintain buses and other vehicles, perform minor repairs in emergencies.
• Map routes and points of call, coordinate vehicle repairs.
• Perform other duties as assigned relevant to the position and departmental needs.

Special Notes:

These are temporary positions: full-time (40 hours/week) and part-time (20 hours/week), with varying shifts and pass days. Expected start: August 21, 2025; end: May 27, 2026. Night and weekend work may be required. FLSA Nonexempt, eligible for overtime. Internal and external candidate searches will occur simultaneously. Preference given to candidates on the rehire roster.

The selected candidate must pass a background check.
