Job summary

Berrien Springs Public Schools seeks a School Bus Driver to provide safe, reliable transportation for students on assigned routes and field trips. You will perform pre-trip inspections and maintain a calm, orderly environment on the bus.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, Michigan bus licenses and training, a clean driving record, and the ability to supervise students and communicate professionally with families and staff. Background checks and testing are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess and maintain all licenses, endorsements, certifications, medical qualifications, and training required to operate a Michigan public school bus.
  • Maintain a driving record that meets District and applicable state requirements.
  • Demonstrate reliability, sound judgment, effective communication skills, and the ability to work professionally with students, families, staff, and the public.
  • Successfully complete all required background checks, drug and alcohol testing, physical examinations, and other employment requirements applicable to school bus drivers.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable, consistent with applicable law and licensing requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Safely transports students on assigned routes, field trips, athletic trips, and other District-approved transportation assignments.
  • Completes required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and promptly reports mechanical concerns, safety issues, or other conditions that may affect the safe operation of the bus.
  • Follows assigned routes, stops, and schedules and communicates significant delays, route concerns, or other transportation issues to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Picks up and discharges students only at authorized locations and follows established student loading, unloading, and safety procedures.
  • Maintains appropriate student behavior and a safe environment on the bus and reports significant or recurring student conduct concerns through established District procedures.
  • Maintains professional and appropriate interactions with students, parents/guardians, coworkers, school personnel, and members of the public.
  • Maintains the assigned vehicle in a reasonably clean and orderly condition and promptly reports damage, hazards, or needed repairs.
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies, accidents, mechanical failures, student medical concerns, and other unexpected situations and completes required reports and documentation.
  • Maintains required transportation records and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Protects confidential student and District information and follows applicable confidentiality requirements.
  • Participates in required meetings, training, testing, and professional development necessary to maintain qualifications and support safe student transportation.
  • Complies with applicable laws and regulations, Board policies, District procedures, Transportation Department expectations, and supervisory directives related to the position.
  • Performs other duties reasonably related to the position as assigned by the Transportation Director or designee.

Physical and Working Conditions

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, including safely operating a school bus; entering and exiting the vehicle; assisting students when necessary; conducting required vehicle inspections; responding to emergency situations; and performing other physical activities required of a school bus driver.

The position involves regular exposure to changing weather and road conditions, traffic, noise, and the conditions typically associated with student transportation.

Start Date: As soon as available

Hours: 25-40 + hours per week

Pay: $21.49 - $24.75 based on experience

Benefits: Single health insurance and the ability to enroll in the State of Michigan Pension
